Changing of the Guard, 6 PM July 1st at the Strater
President Mark led us in the pledge and asked Wayne Bedor to
introduce Bill Luthy of Peoria, Illinois who is awaiting his induction into the
club. Wayne then introduced Ken
Duncan from the Morning Club who is also a Durango native. Tom Crabb introduced his long suffering
dad, Bill Crabb from Columbia, Missouri who is a 2d generation Rotarian. Tim Walsworth introduced Katie Thompson
who is assisting with the High Noon Rotary/United Way July 16, 2010 Golf
Tournament by calling members regarding their door prize contributions. Dan
McCarthy made a stab at introducing Holly Laird of the Evening Club and was
later fined for his efforts. Steve Wheeldon introduced our long lost former
president, Steve Govreau, who escaped from Ignacio to have lunch with us here
in Durango.
Announcements: Mark Donahue has been on the Board of the Adult Education
Center for a number of years and was finally able to attend one of their High
School G.E.D. graduation ceremonies which Mark found to be very moving because
the graduates had strived for so long and hard to get their certificates. Mark reported that we (High Noon
Rotary) had sponsored the refreshments for the graduates and their guests. Tim Walsworth reported that the Commons
building which houses the AEC was recently painted and looks really
spiffy. Tim reported that he still
needs some sponsors for the July 16 Golf Tournament and had a list of all the
current sponsors and asked that we support them. Tim also had enough volunteers to work the tournament on the
16th. Bill Cartwright
still needs more volunteers for the Habitat for Humanity Rotary Build Day to be
held June 24th from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM as he now only has five
volunteers. Emily Spencer
announced the Changing of the Guard to be held two weeks from today July 1st
at the Strater at 6 PM. There will
be no lunch meeting that day. Bill
Luthy announced that there will be an old car’s show in support of the
Discovery Museum on Saturday the 19th. Mr. Word of the Day, Niles Bruno, stumped us (again) with the
word “flagitious”, meaning corrupt, shamefully wicked, etc. President Mark formed an impromptu Texan
Choir from some reluctant members with any affiliation to Texas. Ms. Meet a
Rotarian, Jill Carithers, tapped our esteemed former president, Cathy Crum to
be the honoree today. Cathy was a GSE participant in the Philippines which
motivated her to become our first female member in 1988 and very soon
afterwards our first female president. Cathy was in the mortgage business back when mortgages
were advanced with the expectation that they would be paid off. Cathy retired in 2005 and is involved
in gardening, traveling, volunteering, vintnering and was our Rotarian of the
year for 2008-2009. Her partner of 14 years, Mike, has an 800 acre working
ranch near Gunnison which Cathy pointedly does not visit when Mike makes his
monthly visits there. Born in
Pennsylvania, Cathy is a seven time Paul Harris Fellow and a model
Rotarian. We are honored to have
her as a member! Jill was on a
roll so she decided to introduce Mark Donahue to us in addition to Cathy. Mark has sold real estate
for 42 years and was given the honor of “Realtor of the Year” last year by his
peers. Mark is the managing
partner of the Realty Executives firm. He plays tennis, golf, skis, bikes, plays with his dogs
and genuinely enjoys Durango.
Coming from Cedar Rapids in 2002, Mark has been with us in the HNR Club
for six years. He has three
daughters and three grandchildren and sits on the Boards of the Adult Education
Center and the United Way.
Sergeant-of-Arms pinch hitter for ill
Kathy Firestone, Rick O’Block, stepped up to the plate and hit a home run
today. Ken Fusco was the first
finee for not observing that Rick had been absent for a couple of weeks. Justin Osborne was fined for excelling
in the “Men Who Grill” competition by being the overall winner. Peter Marshall was acknowledged for
having a good sign in the lobby.
Dan McCarthy was dinged for a tepid introduction of Evening club member,
Holly Laird. Dick Pearson and Tom
Crabb were fined for being late but Steve Wheeldon caused Tom’s late arrival so
Steve paid Tom’s fine. Ward Holmes
was fined for making disparaging remarks about Rick’s employer. Tim Walsworth was paying absent Mike
Kane’s fine for him. Dick Pearson
was fined for being late as he was spending quality time with his
grandson. Rick paid a fine for the
honor of being made HNR president due to Cathy Crum’s presidency. All the male chauvinist pigs at Nancy Bennett’s
table were fined for giving Rick a hard time for being a gentleman by serving
Nancy a dessert. Justin Osborne
paid a consulting fee for Bill Crabb’s advice about raising a son. Happy $$$: Steve Wheeldon was $4 happy about having lunch with past
presidents, Steve Govreau and Dick Pearson, and recovering from his recent visit
to Mercy as well as his recent trip to New Orleans to see Kenny Chesney and to
party hearty like the natives. Ken
Fusco happily reported that his daughter, Joanna, was honored as Rotarian of
the Year in the Fort Lauderdale Club to which Ken belonged. Ted Weirather was happy about his
recent trip to Texas where he delivered his son’s furniture to his (son’s) new
home. Son of Ted also recently
became employed with a salaried job that has benefits hence Ted’s big
smile. Bill Cartwright happily
rafted and drank cold beer with Rick Routh on the frigid San Miguel River near
Telluride. Tom Crabb was happy to
have his dad, Bill, with him watching his five year old and mowing five acres
of field as well. Always happy
Jill Carithers reported that Durango 9R has instituted bussing to the Community
College of SW Colorado’s west campus this summer. Jill is also happy that she now has cattle on her property. Dan McCarthy is happy about his
daughter helping with our Rotary Build Day next week and that David Downs was
wearing the colors of Argentina today.
Tom Galbraith was happy about the time he spent at Bob Lieb’s condo on Kauai
as the result of a silent auction win and his recent record time in the Iron
Horse, 3:12 which bettered his 30 year old record of 3:16. Bud Deering is happy that he was in the
Club when Cathy Crum was president.
Dick Sullivan is proud of his son’s race from Seattle to Las Vegas in a
$300,000 car. Walt Nowotny happily
reported about his trip to St. Louis which edged out his time in Durango for
enjoyment. Rick O’Block is happy
that his son is home for the summer and the good time he had at the recent Indianapolis
500. Mark Donahue gave a public
service announcement for the Patsy Cline concert at the Durango Arts
Center. Nancy Bennet drew the
ticket and Brian Myers was the winner.
Program: No program today but the membership
had a good time laughing with and at their fellow members.
Mark Prouty
then led us in “The Four Way Test”: of the things we
think, say or do:
ü
Is it the truth?
ü
Is it fair to all concerned?
ü
Will it build good will and better friendships?
ü
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Yours in Rotary,
Editor
Wayne Bedor
