President Mark led us in the pledge and invited Ignacio to introduce his Mom to us. Tim Walsworth introduced Intern, Katy Thompson who graduated from DHS two years ago and now attends LSU.  Katy is also the daughter of former High Nooner, Scott Thompson, of BP fame.   Long lost member, Justin Osborne, has returned to the fold and introduced his cancer survivor wife, Tami.  Justin thanked the club and community for their support during Tami’s fight with the big “C” which was followed by a very enthusiastic standing ovation by all those present.  Chip Lile’s presence was recognized by President Mark.  Rick Routh introduced visiting Rotarian from Coral Gardens, Florida, CPA Jim Dolan, who distanced himself from Rick’s offer that he (Jim) would do our taxes for us.

Announcements:     Chip Lile announced that the District is looking for our support to host an exchange student this year, 2010-2011.  After explaining the program in detail and explaining that our club has a tradition of hosting exchange students, Chip took a hand and voice vote and determined the Club is a willing supporter for hosting an exchange student next year.  Tom Crabb editorialized that offering the host families an X-Box would be an enticement for a more enthusiastic vote.  Tim Walsworth reminded us that July 16th is the 15th anniversary of our annual golf tournament fund raiser.  Tim has sponsorships from the First National Bank and the Glacier Club and is now looking for committee members, door prizes and volunteers of every stripe and persuasion to help with pulling this event off.  Emily Spencer hyped the upcoming Changing of the Guard social on July 1st highlighting the end of one Rotary year and the beginning of the next to be held at the Strater.  It will take the place of the weekly meeting. Rotary Member Roster Meister, Tom Galbraith, appealed to all to update their personal information in the annual roster and to contact him (Tom) if they were not present at today’s meeting.  Bob Chaput will again be doing the photographs for the roster so line up next week to get a picture of you in the roster that has been taken in this century.  Niles Bruno outdid himself again this week with the Word of the Day, “facultative” which means not compulsive or automatic.  Rich Kolb randomly selected the always effervescent and energetic Jill Carithers for us to meet. today  Jill is the Southwest Colorado Community College (SWCCC) external programs outreach and marketing person who gets SWCCC’s programs in front of high schools and others interested is their services.  SWCCC has many programs including nursing, biology, auto mechanics and many others to numerous to mention.  It costs about $100 per credit hour to attend their courses.  They also do certificate programs in OSHA training and mining safety. Jill has two great kids who ski, camp, hike and attend Rotary fundraising events.  Thanks Rich for introducing us to Jill, who is a wonderful Rotarian.  Nacho told us that he squired his Mom around town and is attending the DHS graduation tomorrow.  Nacho reports he is happy that school is over and he will be leaving on June 13th for the annual exchange students’ trip around the U.S.

Sergeant of Arms (SoA):    Emily Spencer immediately fined everyone who did not have a wedding ring on their “left” hand.  Wedding rings on the right hand did not count.  Steve Dorf and Steve Redding had birthdays.  Happy $$$: Justin Osborne was happy to be back with Rotary.  Wayne Bedor was happy to be leaving for his high school reunion in Vermont next week and was optimistic that two volunteers would step forward to do the newsletter on June 3d and June 10th.  Moni Grushkin is happy to be attending her stepson, Aaron’s, graduation tomorrow.  Aaron will be attending the same college as Moni’s daughter who is doing great at the Strater, according to Emily.  Bud is happy to have missed his 60th reunion of his pilot training class.  Mark Donahue is happy that the Adult Education Center is graduating 50 people with their GEDs in a ceremony at the Durango Public Library.  Tim Walsworth is $10  happy to have scored a couple of big sponsorships for the HNR/UW golf tournament to be held at Dalton Ranch on July 16th.  David Downs is happy to sponsor a softball team called the “Hung Jury” and was happy to see the new format for seating at today’s lunch.  Nacho’s Mom happily thanked everyone for taking such good care of Nacho these past nine months.  Tom Brossia is happy to be back from Uruguay.  Emily signed off with Happy $$$ for the upcoming four day weekend.  Walt Nowotny was the happy ticket winner.

Program:     Today’s program was to  discuss solutions to two of the issues that have been raised at the recent meeting in March and again by the 210-2011 Board: 1) How to increase membership participation in the Club and 2) addressing our declining enrollment caused by financial stress.  Dan Morgenstern is chairing a committee consisting of Burt Coleman, Bud Poe and Howard Wilson to study the issue and make a recommendation to the members on how any changes would be implemented.

Mark Prouty then led us in “The Four Way Test”: of the things we think, say or do:

ü  Is it the truth?

ü  Is it fair to all concerned?

ü  Will it build good will and better friendships?

ü  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

      Yours in Rotary,

Editor

Wayne Bedor
