Next Week’s Program: Club Assembly – We will work on developing solutions to
the issues that were raised a few weeks ago regarding improving the High Noon
Rotary Club.
Fellow Rotarians: Guests: Tom Galbraith
introduced visiting Rotarian, Jim Dolan, from Coral Gardens, Florida. Jim’s
club just had their annual fund raiser which raised $60,000. Mark Donahue introduced Bill Luthy,
a former Rotarian from Peoria, Illinois.
Dick Pearson was recognized by Mark Prouty for being with us today. Niles Bruno talked up a meeting
at the Boys and Girls Club that will help parents and grandparents to have more
meaningful conversations with their children and grandchildren. Wayne Bedor introduced: Lea Gervais,
outgoing Interact President; Cory Burns, Incoming Interact President; and
Louisa Drouet from the Morning Club who had been a chaperone on Interact’s
recent trip to Jamaica. They would
be the program for today to talk about their trip to Jamaica.
Announcements: Rich Kolb talked
up our July 16th golf tournament at Dalton Ranch. Everyone should participate at some
level: player, sponsor, door prize donor, volunteer, etc. Rich also wants to know members’ other
interests such as swimming, poker, etc. so we can broaden the club’s appeal to
members regarding preferred activities.
Tom Galbraith is updating the roster and everyone is encouraged to
update their personal data. Tom
passed around a clip board with the roster template for everyone to review the
roster data. Nacho became a media
star and was featured in the latest edition of the El Diablo, the DHS insert in
the Durango Herald. Nacho worked
last Saturday and attended the Taste of Durango on Sunday. When he was interviewed by the reporter
for the paper, he failed to mention Rotary. Tom Galbraith paid the fine for Nacho’s oversight. Dick
Sullivan announced that the Adaptive Sports Association will be doing rafting
trips on the Animas starting next week. Word for the day Czar, Niles Bruno asked that we identify “heteronym” which
means two or more words with the same spelling but different pronunciations and
meanings. Examples: row – a
line of objects pronounced ro with a hard “o” and row pronounced like “cow”
meaning an altercation. Niles also
reminded us that he is the final authority as to words’ definitions and
pronunciations. “Meet a Rotarian”
emcee, Rich Kolb had Dr. Lee Ann, doctor of optometry and owner of the
optometry business in the professional building south east of Wal Mart to stand
and be identified. Lee Ann has
been in Durango about 1 ½ years and bought her practice from former High Noon Rotarian,
Robin Jackman. Her practice has
outstanding staff that provides excellent service regardless of the product the
customer needs. Lee Ann has a
husband, Daniel, who is a stay at home Dad to their two children who are in the
5th an 7th grades.
Lee Ann and her family moved here from Houston where they had spent 25
years. Nice to meet you and have
you in our club Lee Ann!
Sergeant of Arms (SoA): Brian Myers cheerfully stood in for our May Sergeant of Arms,
Emily Spencer, who was away singing today. Brian announced birthdays for Sara Olsen and Vern
Swanson. Since nether was present
to defend themselves or pay their b’day fine, Brian announced that one is 72
and the other is 41. You
guess which. Ted Weirather paid
his wedding anniversary and his club anniversary in the same check which had to
be a very big number. Jill
Carithers had her 3d club anniversary and President Elect Nominee Moni Grushkin
had her 4th.
Brian then closed out with a fine for all those who President Mark had
asked to volunteer for SoA duty who took a step backward when they should have
stepped forward in the spirit of Rotary volunteerism. Brian asked everyone that is happy to pay $1 fine, sad
folks were fined $2 and those who were ambivalent were asked to pay $3. Great job Brian! Cathy Crum won the
drawing today.
Program: Lea Gervais, Cory Burns and Louis Drouet
then did a tag team approach to describe Interact’s Jamaica trip over the DHS
Spring Break. The PowerPoint went
off faultlessly operated by Cory’s deft technology adept hands. The key aspects of the trip involved:
Day 1 - reading Dr. Seuss’ “Lorax” to children in an orphanage called PALS in
ACTION; Day 2 – painting beds in the orphanage; Day 3 – having fun
at the Dunleavy Falls; Day 4 – painting a Community Center used by
disabled students for eight hours; Day 5 (Friday) was back at the school where
attendance is optional on Fridays; Day 6 - they painted a soup kitchen while
Cory planted grass and helped set sprinklers at an agricultural school. Lea highlighted what the 18 Interactors
learned and experienced: Jamaican culture and food, the water is safe to drink
from the tap, there are some large insects in Jamaica, and marijuana is very
prevalent which explains the big smiles on everyone’s faces. Marijuana is illegal but the laws
against usage are not enforced.
The Interact Club spent six months working to raise the funds to take
the trip which cost about $600 each.
Sounded like a mind expanding experience for them and the
chaperones. Good job
Interact!
Mark Prouty
then led us in “The Four Way Test”: of the things we
think, say or do:
ü
Is it the truth?
ü
Is it fair to all concerned?
ü
Will it build good will and better friendships?
ü
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Yours in Rotary,
Editor
Wayne Bedor
