Next Week’s Program: Rotary Social and Implementation Plan
for Member’s Suggested Changes
Fellow Rotarians: Guests: Dan Morgenstern introduced wife, Polly. President Mark commented on the
presence of Mike Kane and Melisa Caskey who we have missed of late. Bill Cartwright
introduced Joe Williams and Eddie Cheoung of the morning club. Mark expected Tom Crabb and Bud Deering
to introduce their lunch companion, President Katie Zortmann, of the Rotaract
Club, who sat between them like a rose between two thorns but alas, they
declined the opportunity. Mark was
left to do the honors himself.
Sergeant of Arms, Emily Spencer, was alerted to lay a heavy fine on the
two miscreants. Ward Holmes
introduced Governor Elect nominee, Roger Ptolemy and Roger’s guest Katie North
who later saved the day for our program with a computer fix.
Announcements: Mark informed the membership of the HNR Board’s decisions at
the 5/11/2010 meeting. Monies were approved as follows: Discovery Museum
$1,500; Southwest Colorado Mental Health, $250; La Plata Youth Services, $2,000;
Police dog for City of Durango, $1,000; Durango Foundation for Educational
Excellence, $1,000. Also, there
was a thank-you note from the Women’s Resource Center for the $1,000 we
contributed to the Girl’s to Women Event that gave 250 8th grade
girls a day of mentoring with 50 women to help them prepare for the transition
from the 8th grade to high school. Joe Williams and Eddie Cheoung of the Morning Club announced
their major fundraiser, Western Heritage Days to be held at the County
Fairgrounds on June 12th. An entire day of family activities can be
had for $35.00. It is their
biggest fund raiser and raised $20,000 in 2009. Eddie had 500 tickets available
for sale. Tom Brossia informed us
that Steve Wheeldon is still in the hospital with an unidentified malady. Joe Williams recognized his Rotary
sponsor, High Noon member, Tom Galbraith, with a big Rotary hug of appreciation
for introducing Joe to the world of Rotary International. Nacho announced he
had a busy week working with Judy Duke and ate out often during the week with
Tami Coddington and Jim Duke.
Nacho is also excited about school being over and his Mom coming to
Durango on May 23d. Niles had a
great Word for the Day, heuristic, which means serving to stimulate interest,
discovery and understanding. Rich Kolb introduced us to High Noon Rotary
member, Dr. Barb Stine, (PhD Chemistry, University of Illinois), explosives
expert, and 30+ years with the labs at Los Alamos. In her tenure at the labs, Barb headed up several studies on
explosives including one which entailed putting explosives in ovens to
determine how quickly they age. Bill Cartwright inquired whether Bob Chaput may
have fallen into one of the ovens and is really only 30 years old instead of
sixty something.
Sergeant of Arms (SoA): Emily Spencer reminded Ted Weirather of
his 26th year anniversary of wedded bliss. Jill Carithers wrongly guessed that she has been in the club
four years but it has only been three years so received the reduced fine of
$3. Happy $$$. Niles Bruno is happy that wife, Carol,
is recovering very quickly from her recent shoulder surgery. Bill Cartwright is happy about the facilities
improvement help that Bill Hobson and Steve Osborne gave the Volunteers of
America Homeless Shelter. Bud Poe
is happy that Peter Marshall has repaired the craters in the road leading to
the Doubletree parking lot before he (Bud) had to get another wheel
realignment. Steve Osborne and Jan
Measles are happy about their new grandson whose parents are Ryan and Marie. Rick
O’Block is happy that his son is home from college and survived his first jump
out of perfectly good airplane in the name of skydiving. Mike Kane is happy that his dad is
recovering from his prostate cancer surgery. Ted Weirather is extremely happy
that his son has closed on a house in Arlington, Texas so has officially
vacated Ted’s basement. Tami Coddington is ecstatic that the FDIC bank
examiners left her bank after only three days and did not remain the scheduled
five days. Tom Galbraith is happy
that the $85 that he paid for a mechanical checkup on a $2,500 Forester proved
it was worth far less than that.
Angie Beach paid a sad dollar for her departure from her job a couple of
weeks ago but is looking at it as an opportunity to take a new direction in her
life. We are confident that Angie
will land on her feet and will go on to great new horizons and will be back
with us soon. Tom Brossia and Bill Hobson are happy about going to Uruguay to
do some serous fishing. Bud Poe
won the drawing and donated it to Nacho’s trip spending money fund.
Program: Katie Zortmann,
Rotaract President, stepped us through her club’s recent trip to Ecuador to
assist a non-profit orphanage down there.
She went with seven other members of Rotaract, a Morning Club Rotarian,
B.J. Boucher, and Evening Club member, Tom Graham a dentist. They worked on a cafeteria/roadside
cafe, jungle gym, vegetable garden, pig sty, and landscaping around the
orphanage. The Rotaractors had a
wonderful time helping out at the orphanage and connecting with the kids and
staff there. The dentist, Tom Graham, checked the teeth of all the kids and
staff at the orphanage. The
Rotaractors acquitted themselves very well according to Rotarian, B.J. Boucher
and truly lived up to the Rotary creed of “Service above Self”. It appeared to be a life changing event
for all that participated. Thanks
for the update Katie. It appeared
that all members of High Noon Rotary were proud to be the sponsoring club for
Rotaract.
Mark Prouty then led us in “The Four Way Test”: of the things we think, say or do:
ü
Is it the truth?
ü
Is it fair to all concerned?
ü
Will it build good will and better friendships?
ü
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Yours in Rotary,
Editor
