Fellow Rotarians:

President Mark led us in the pledge and Tom Brossia introduced Rotarian and past district governor, Jack Walls, retired Aspen architect and recent transplant to Durango from Gainesville.  Tom then introduced guest #2 on his left, Rotarian Joe Penperline an accountant and skier who visits from California from time to time.  Jill Carithers introduced summertime High Noon Rotarian, Nancy Hammond formerly of Basin Printing that is now run by son, Jeff.  Nancy has always been a generous supporter of all High Noon service projects and fund raisers.  Chip Lile and Angie Beach introduced today’s program, Anita Smith.

Announcements:      Ted Weirather and Jill Carithers again hyped the upcoming very important 4/10/2010 fund raiser, Casino Night, AKA Gambling at the High Noon Saloon.  They are seeking more sponsorships (Alpine Bank, Bank of the San Juans and El Rancho have already inked their contribution).  A sponsorship of $500 gets you the title “Gambler”, $1,000 is an upgrade to “Barkeep” and $2,000 makes you a “Sheriff” which I’m certain gets the silver star to go with the title. It’s more than just gambling this year with live entertainment throughout the evening and a real live gunfight.  I’m sure they will be shooting blanks since the event will be held in the Durango Arts Center.  Also, there are great prizes including a trip for two to Las Vegas with a stay at the Doubletree.  Thanks to Howard Wilson and Peter Marshall for that one.  Volunteers are still needed at the welcome desk, decorating and cleanup.  Western wear, formal or whatever will be in style that evening.  Jan Measles, Captain of For Kid’s Sake Bowlathon in support of the Big Brothers and Big sisters passed around a sign up sheet to underwrite her efforts.  Dick Sullivan announced that the Dave Spencer downhill races raised $60,000 for the Adaptive Sport Association.  High Noon Rotary won the Community Service Award for the fourth year in a row. Tom Brossia, Peter Marshall, Steve Redding, Rich Kolb, Jill Carithers, Ted Weirather, and Ken Fusco made up the Rotary team which of course beat Kiwanis.   Dick then passed out medals and the “honor roll” (you had to be there) which the Rotarians proudly displayed.  Nacho has moved in with the Dan McCarthy family where he has to take cold showers for some reason.  He celebrated his birthday at Tami’s and received a complimentary copy of “Hustler” magazine which is not at all like the “Smithsonian.”  Nacho was selling coffee to benefit the Interact Club and challenged High Nooners to surpass the Morning Rotary Club which had purchased 35 bags of coffee.  At the end of the meeting Nacho had sold 37 bags of coffee!  Great job High Nooners and Nacho!  Nacho will be going to Jamaica with the other Interacters for spring break.

Sergeant of Arms (SoA):  Past president and current public relations committee chair, Ward Holmes, is now the Sergeant of Arms for March 2010.  He fined Don Freemyer and John Beekman for their birthdays.  Ward also reminded Bud Poe and Jeanne Wheeldon of their club anniversaries, 15 years and 13 years respectively.  Nancy Hammond was welcomed back to the High Noon fold for the summer.  Nancy said she would pay happy $$$ next week for her upcoming 48th wedding anniversary.  Samantha Gallant’s hockey team won again so she paid up.     Dan McCarthy is happy that his daughter is returning from the east coast university that she attends and immediately departs for Jamaica.  Dan also mentioned that Nacho is handling the cold showers okay and has also attended four hours of films at the film festival. Dan then did some cheerleading for the FLC girl’s basketball team which is on its way to the RMAC in Pueblo.  Bud Poe happily gushed over Nancy Hammond’s past support of community projects and now Nancy’s son Jeff’s generosity in support of the Independent Film Festival.  Dick Sullivan was happy about the performance and participation of his 10 skiers that skied in the Dave Spencer Classic.  Ted Weirather is happy about the three sponsors that have signed up for the High Noon Saloon event on 3/10/2010: the El Ranch, Alpine Bank and Bank of the San Juans.  Happy $$$ were paid by Chip Lile for the honor of skiing with Tom Brossia on Dave Spencer Classic day.  Many aspire but few are called. Chip was just lucky that day.  Angie Beach was happy to see Jill Carithers as the female representative on the Rotary Ski team.  Also, Angie just soloed.  Wayne Bedor was happy to have attended the President Elect Training Seminar (P.E.T.S.) in the Denver Tech Center this past weekend. The mystery Rotarian turned out to be Rick Kolb after four incorrect guesses by the membership.  The ticket was drawn and Kathy Firestone won and donated the proceeds to the many causes of Rotary.

Program:    Chip Lile and Angie Beach introduced Anita Smith who is a certified Soma Practitioner who went to India and had a hip resurfaced.  Anita shared with us an x-ray of the resurfaced hip which looks somewhat like a top.  Anita was so overwhelmed by the kindness of the Indian people during her two week stay that she has taken on two missions.  One is to support an Indian orphanage child’s education and to tell people the story of hip resurfacing.    Anita signed up four orphanage sponsorships at the Daybreak Rotary.  Anita had some great pictures of her sojourn in India including cows on the beach, garbage in the streets, and throngs swimming in pools after their Hindu worship services.  This was a very interesting program that was well presented with empathy, warmth and feeling.  Another good program Rick.

Mark Prouty then led us in “The Four Way Test”: of the things we think, say or do:

ü  Is it the truth?

ü  Is it fair to all concerned?

ü  Will it build good will and better friendships?

ü  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

 Yours in Rotary,
