Fellow Rotarians:
- President Elect Mark Prouty 2009 displayed his Presidential timber
while leading us in the pledge.
Howard Wilson introduced his 30 year friend Norm Banks from
Raleigh, N.C. who is traveling to Las Vegas with Howard for some
competitive gambling. Howard
will split his winnings with the club up to $20k. Rick Routh introduced ski
instructor Red Carver who worked for Ford Motor Company for many
years. Mark Donohue
introduced friend, Rich Kolb, for the 7th time. Brad Tafoya, Daybreak Club President,
was introduced by Bill Cartwright who then talked up the Daybreak ClubÕs rodeo
and dance fundraiser on June 27th at the Fairgrounds. Lynn Westberg, youngest member of
the evening club, was introduced by Steve Wheeldon and then she pitched us
on their clubÕs 4th of July gourmet breakfast fundraiser to be held at
Rotary Park. Tickets today were $8 while on the 4th they will
be $9.
- Announcements: Mark Prouty announced there would
be a Board meeting on July 14th from 4:30 PM too 6:00 PM at the
Public LibraryÕs Rotary Room. Mike Kane talked up the July 17th
United Way/High Noon Rotary golf tournament. Mike and Tim Walsworth have been really hustling on
getting hole sponsors and teams together. Only four holes are left to sponsor and we need 10 more
teams. Tom Galbreath, self proclaimed
ÒRasta ManÓ, asked members to update their roster material and their
pictures if need be so that he and Bob Chaput could go forward with the
publication of the roster in time for Mark ProutyÕs peaceful transition to
power on the 25th. Ted Weirather for the last time
announced the June 25th turning over the reins of power to Mark
Prouty by Tami Coddington.
We have 95 folks signed up to attend the sit down meal and
recognizing the award of accolades to membersÕ achievements during the
2008/2010 year.
- Sergeant of Arms, Bill Cartwright recognized Burt ColemanÕs BIG
birthday. He didnÕt say what it was but it may have occurred during
HooverÕs term in office. Next
came wedding anniversaries with Marilyn EstesÕ 20th and
honorary members, the FogelmanÕs celebrating their wedding dayÕs 46th
anniversary.
Club anniversary: Emily Spencer three years. Your humble scribe was fined
for misspelling member Tom CrabÕs name as Crabbe too many times. Justin Osborne got his name in the
paper for his ÒMen Who GrilleÓ achievements and threw in an IOU. Barb Stine was amazingly humble with
her PenguinsÕ win of the Stanley Cup finals over Samantha GallantÕs Red
Wings. BarbÕs graciousness in
victory compelled her to write a $250 check to the Rotary Foundation. When she returns, Samantha is
expected to be as generous in her teamÕs loss. Jan Measles explained Samantha had to be out of town
for today. Bill Cartwright
was happy for his granddaughterÕs first birthday. Tim Walsworth was happy about his
ride down the river on Rick RouthÕs raft and Rick reciprocated with happy
$$$. Howard Wilson and Steve
Dorf were recognized by Bill Cartwright for their upcoming trip to Las
Vegas. Howard plans to split
his World Series Texas HoldÕem winnings in Vegas with our Club up to
$20,000. Mike Burns was $5
happy to have been able to spend the weekend on Phil BrysonÕs Lake Powell
houseboat. First time he had
been on Lake Powell even though he has been on the Western Slope for 20
years. Tom Galbreath was
happy to be traveling to visit wife, StannaÕs, 97 year old mother right
after todayÕs meeting. Tom
paid to recognize ÒBike to Work DayÓ. Steve Dorf was happy to not be in
the paper. Bud Deering was
happy for wife JudyÕs upcoming birthday on June 27th. Brian Myers was happy to be on the
Durango team that won the StateÕs bass fishing contest for the third year
in a row. Jill Carithers was
also happy about the Penguins beating the Redwings.
PROGRAM: Mark Prouty introduced fellow HNer and management
and leadership consultant, Phil Bryson, to tell us about the changes in the
auto world. Phil put
it in terms of the rise and fall of the British, Roman and Greek empires. In simple terms the empires and
corporations like General Motors find themselves at their apex and then due to
the behaviors they develop getting there, they slide to the bottom and wonder
what happened. Phil says there are
good and bad corporations but the good ones know how to change to meet the new
demands in the marketplace while the poor ones decline in their marketplace
presence. General
Motors and Chrysler both fall into this category. Chrysler went through the process twice but didnÕt learn
from the first experience in the early 1980s under Lee Iacocca. Phil said to pull out of the latest
debacle, the car industry must play to win and not play to not lose. There were
some good pointers in PhilÕs presentation for business and life as well. Thanks for an enlightening presentation
Phil.
