Program
May 7, 2009: Boom - Thai Exchange Program and Craig Larson, County Assessor
Fellow Rotarians:
- Tami led the pledge and Rick Routh introduced the trio of
presenters for today: Andrea Mull, Carson Jones and Sheri Amass with
Durango Downtown. Mark DonohueÕs guest was retired banker, Rich Colt.
Niles Bruno introduced his friend and retired advertising and marketing
guy, Bill Nimlick. Burt ColemanÕs guest was Becky Clarke, recent arrival from
Anchorage, Alaska, who is helping with the Therapeutic Riding Program.
- Announcements: Chip Lile again announced a great
opportunity for HNR membership to raise some money by serving beer at the
upcoming Arena Cross (motorcycle event) to be held at the Fairgrounds on
May 16th and 17th. All the planning and other logistics for this event has
been taken care of and our only job is to show up to cashier, ID check and
serve beer. Chip guarantees
this is an excellent way to build club camaraderie and spirit while
raising much needed funds to backfill some of our budgetary revenue
shortfall in the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Chip would like volunteers to work at least two hours
on one of those days. There
may be as many as 1,500 attendees at the event. Boom was also selling $10 tickets on behalf of the
Interact fundraiser to be held at Carvers, Tuesday, May 19th
from 6-9 PM. If Interact doesnÕt sell at least 300 tickets, it will have
to find another venue for the event in 2010. Boom also reported on her activities last week
which included working at a pizza and chocolate chip cookie fund
raiser. When baking the
cookies apparently they set off the school fire alarm with some excessive
smoke generated in the kitchen.
Tami filled in for Cathy Crum to remind members that the Irish GSE
team is here and there will be pot luck at the Durango Public Library this
evening, Thursday April 30th from 6:00-9:00 PM. They are a great group to
represent Ireland and are thoroughly enjoying their trip to Colorado so
far. Be there this evening to meet them and representatives from the other
Durango Rotary Clubs. HNR is
to bring entrees and desserts.
Jan Measles is looking for a volunteer to help out with
transportation for Boom this weekend.
- Soon to be Sgt of Arms Emeritus Justin Osborne fined folks $1 who
were without their pins. Justin was looking for people who havenÕt shown up for
their fines and passed along a couple of names for May Sgt of Arms, Emily
Spencer. Justin identified
Mike Kane for expanding his business and being on the front page of the
Herald and Al Harper for his support of TLC for FLC. Tim Walsworth (and any other
members) were fined for sitting at the same table two weeks in a row. Moni Helling and Dan McCarthy paid
happy dollars for being within two weeks of their childrenÕsÕ graduating
from DHS. Mark Prouty paid
belated happy $$$ for his son graduating from high school a couple of
years ago and Mark being taken off the PrincipalÕs speed dial. I feel your pain on that one Mark! Rick OÕBlock was very happy to see
DHS win the SWL conference in baseball. Bill Cartwright had a wonderful experience hiking
in the Escalante Staircase Park and in the slot canyons. Samantha Gallant and Barb Stine
are still having a thing about competing hockey teams and paid happy
$$$. Samantha is looking
forward to the finals. Justin
Osborne challenged Tim Walsworth over the Mavericks and Nuggets.
- PROGRAM: Rick Routh
introduced our program presenter, Andrea Mull who had a Power Point
presentation on ŅDowntown DurangoÓ, a web site that can be used by any
locals to publicize events, services, activities etc. The web site was originally
established in 1995 by Sheri Amass who gave a synopsis of the history of
the web site. It is particularly popular with non-profits for economic
advertising of their activities.
To prove it, Tim Walsworth asked Andrea to go to the date of July
17th so we could see that the United Way and High Noon Rotary
Golf Tournament at Dalton Ranch is on there. It was.
This presentation showed great teamwork between the Doubletree
kitchen staff, HNR membership and the presenters to solve some Power Point
technical difficulties. Chip
Lile cut to the chase and brought in his own miniature PC and got the
program on track for us. Kudos
to Chip! The site receives
2,000+ hits per day so community members who need to advertise should
consider Durango Downtown. Tami led us in the 4 way test and closed the meeting
The Four Way Test in
everything we do and say:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build good will and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
