Fellow Rotarians:

á      Tami kicked off the meeting today announcing that she was proud to have four generations of her family present: Grandmother, Mother, Tami and her son Tanner for which she paid a fine. Other guests included John Peel, journalist and todayÕs program and John Singleton, a partner in the new Irish Pub located at the former Burns Bank site and subsequently aka ScootÕn Blues and our new 2008-2009 exchange students.

á       Tami announced that the Morning Rotary Club will be approaching us about a joint project with them on the Tijuana Dump Children.

á       Ted Robson reported on the upcoming baseball game and picnic with the Durango Rotary Club at 3:30 PM on August 23rd.  Ted needs help with the set up for the picnic, please contact him as many hands make for light work, paraphrasing.

á      Tim Walsworth announced that he would like to finalize the report to the club on the golf tournament; however, he is still trying to collect all the money from hole sponsors. Members with kneecapping experience and owners of brass knuckles please report to Tim (just kidding – Tim always get his dough with much more finesse and less fuss). Tim also passed around a large card of appreciation for club membership signatures to be presented to Wells Fargo who has been our major sponsor of the golf tournament going back several years.  We really appreciate their loyal support and that of all the other multi-year sponsors.

á        Silver tongued and oh so diplomatic Sergeant-of-Arms Tom Galbraith conducted an outstanding drill to elicit fines, major and minor alike, from our always generous membership. Tom also paid a fine for what he confessed as major gaffes he committed in conducting his duties last week. HeÕs doing a great job!

á      Program:  Rick Routh introduced John Peel, a journalist with the Durango Herald since 1993. From 1993 to 1998, John was a reporter for the Herald and since 1998 he has written a very informative and entertaining column about animals, people and other stuff.  Initially, John did not believe that he is a Òpeople personÓ until he hiked the Colorado Trail. In the middle of that multi-month hiking journey he discovered that he missed being around people and subsequently determined that he really is a Òpeople personÓ. In his column, he writes about humans, animals and places.  His subjects include everything from a blind climber of Everest to some WW II and Vietnam veterans. He treats his subjects with sensitivity while giving the reader information with some real punch to it. I encourage you to read it the next time you see JohnÕs picture on the front page of the Herald. John defines the description of unassuming and modest.  Another great program thanks to our programs guy, Rick Routh.

My personal thanks to Emily Spencer and Barb Stine for writing this letter for the past four Thursdays whilst I traveled the  Green Mountains of Vermont, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the pine forests and islands off the coast of Maine, the Freedom Trail and Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts and historical sites of Connecticut. The sea food was great!  ItÕs great to be back in Durango.

Yours in Rotary,
