Fellow Rotarians:
·
Tami provided a reminder that new or slightly used childen’s books
will be collected at the July 31st meeting in connection with the
District Governor’s visit. The books
will be distributed by a local pediatrician’s office.
·
Tami also reminded everyone
about the Board Meeting and Retreat coming up on Friday, July 25th at
Durango Office Suites.
·
Tim Walsworth gave a final reminder of the Golf Tournament on
Friday, July 18 with a 7:15am check in.
·
Ted Robson announced that there will be a baseball game, High Noon vs
Daybreak, and BBQ on Saturday, August 23, at the Fairgrounds. Festivities will start about 1pm and signup
will start at the July 24th meeting.
More details to follow.
·
Don Freemyer announced that he and several other Rotarians will not
be able to attend the Golf Tournament because they will be attending the annual
Big Brother/Big sister Fly Fishing Tourney on July 18th. Pledges sheets were made available.
·
Niles Bruno requested that all members encourage, in any way they
can, the City and County to support the Youth Services Program budget
request. The Program has been hugely
successful and needs support to continue.
·
Angie Beach and Frank Valen announced that Pinnacle Assurance will
donate $10k for the Interact Calendar Project.
Eighty percent of the profits from sale of the calendars will go to
Interact to support their activities and 20% comes to our Club with half going
to the Scholarship Foundation. Frank
received the members’ thanks for arranging the donation.
·
Program: Robert McDaniel, of
the Animas Museum, made a very interesting presentation about Durango events
100 years ago. There were numerous
intriguing similarities between conditions and activities of 1908 and 2008
including bank panics, Democratic Party conventions in Denver, destructive
fires in buildings on Main Street, sidewalk issues, and perhaps the most
disturbing – the fact that in 1908, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series and
in 2008, the Cubs have the best record in baseball at this point in the season
– Oops! No opinions in the news!
The next meeting will be Thursday, July 24th and the
program will be the result of an exchange of Past Presidents with our friends
on the other side of the wall, the Kiwanis Club. Their Past President will update us on their
activities and Chip Lile will regale them on ours.
Yours in Rotary
