- Program: Rick Routh
introduced Jackie Morlan, Executive Director of Community Connections (CC)
and one of CCÕs clients, Steve Goff.
Jackie has 38 years in the field of working with folks with
developmental disabilities (DD).
She has been with CC for 21 years. She started out being a volunteer with DD when still in
high school. A person with a
DD usually has an IQ <70 (diagnosed prior to age 22) and with
concurrent impairments in two areas of daily living. Some of the folks with DD include:
Downs syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, blind and deaf, shaken baby
syndrome. CC is the only DD
serving agency in the five county Four Corners Regions. Last year they had 250 clients, 85
staff and a $4.5 million budget. There are 20 similar agencies state
wide. Their offices are in
the Columbine Building in Bodo Park.
Prior to 1975, people with DD were treated differently than other
people. After 1975 they were
mainstreamed. People with DD
are not in group homes anymore but are in private residences or host
homes. The hosts are paid a
generous stipend for having DD people in their homes. Jackie introduced one of her
clients, Steve Goff, who talked about his job in a coffee shop, did a
little marketing for the coffee shop and had some very good things to say
about some of his colleagues and the program. His favorite coffee is Black Velvet. There are 12,000 DD people
Statewide who are on a waiting list to be serviced by a CC type
agency. Amendment 51, a
ballot question to generate sales tax revenue to address this problem, was
defeated on Tuesday.
Accordingly, the shortfall in revenue will continue to preclude all
the DD people in the State being served by a CC type agency in the near
future. If you couldnÕt feel
or sense the love Jackie has for her clients, you werenÕt watching or
listening. A first class
presentation!!

The Four Way Test in
everything we do and say:
Ÿ
Is it the truth?
Ÿ
Is it fair to all concerned?
Ÿ
Will it build good will and better friendships?
Ÿ
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
