PROGRAM OCTOBER 9, 2008: Sara Olsen – Rotaract Visit
to Ecuador
Fellow Rotarians:
- Tami kicked off the meeting with the Pledge and introduced Marilyn
Estes for the last time before her induction into the HNR Club. Rick Routh introduced Susan
and Ted Hill as our program today. Rick also introduced fellow engineer,
Steve Pavlik, with Russell Engineering. Bud Poe introduced Morning Rotarian Bob Conrad. Robin Jackman introduced new owner
of Advanced Eye Care, Lee Anne Hogan. Ward Holmes had to speak extra loudly to overcome the
seniorsÕ table prattle in order to introduce Steve Dorf, CEO of Fastrack
Communications. The seniorsÕ
table accepted WardÕs apology for interrupting their chatter with a guest
introduction. Amy Spencer
introduced Barbara Hackensberry.
Scott Flyte was introduced for the last time before his induction. ÒBoomÓ told us about her fun trip
to the Rotary District Conference where she picked up a lot of new pins for
her Rotary Blazer and made some new friends. She also told us about singing in a concert at Miller
Middle School. Tami asked for
volunteers to help fulfill ÒBoomÕsÓ desire to learn how to ride a
horse. Burt Coleman
volunteered his daughter and her horse for ÒBoomÕsÓ riding experience. Thanks Burt! Tami introduced Jim
Dukes from the Morning Club.
- Tami announced that
Joy Mathis reported that Scott Mathis is recovering from knee surgery and
their grandson is recovering from an accident. Bill Cartwright reminded everyone of the Habitat for
HumanityÕs Rotary Build Day in Bayfield on October 25th. Presently about 12 Rotarians are
signed up. You can go for a
few hours or all day if you wish.
- October Sergeant-of-Arms, Jill Carithers, kicked off fines doing
her Monty Hall thing. Her tie
was nicely knotted by haberdasher-at-large, Dan Morgenstern. Ward Holmes threw down some money
for his 25th anniversary and Steve Wheeldon paid for being
late. Sara Olsen had happy
and sad $$$ because her daughter just left for college in Denver. Frank Valen paid because he is now
the landlord for a Mexican Fast Food place. Frank also suggested we HNers form a travel group to go
to the Rotary International Conference in Birmingham, England next
year. Tom Brossia paid for
his happy trip to Alaska where he saw moose and his plane didnÕt
crash. Cathy Crum paid again
for circulating her Lynch petition.
Bud Poe finally validated what many of us knew already that Bob
Chaput is or has a smart a__.
Proof is that his derriere dialed Bud PoeÕs cell phone three times
before Bob told it to cease and desist. Bob explained that it had to do with the phone being in
his cycling shirt. Both Bud
and Bob paid. Mike Burns is
happy to report that his son recovered from a broken leg after falling in
a bed jumping incident and can now do a Forrest Gump impersonation. Moni paid hopeful $$$ that DHS
boys will win their next football game. Justin Osborne was exceptionally happy because 1) of
the Upcoming Ducks Unlimited fundraiser 2) he is his firmÕs top lister 3)
he listed the largest ranch
in SW Colorado at 1,870 acres and 4) he and his wife are going to be
parents again. WeÕre confident Justin dropped in at least $50 for all of
that happiness!! The inimitable Bud Deering mused on how Justin could do
number 4 while simultaneously doing 1, 2, and 3. ThatÕs one of the
differences between being 80 and 30 Bud. Jennifer Simon reported a broken
arm incident with her child and reminded us all of homes being dangerous
places especially for young children jumping on beds. Tom Crabbe was happy to be able to
return Jan MeaslesÕ pants and can fill in the details. Bob Chaput is happy to be leaving tomorrow
for Nova Scotia with Mimi.
Birthdays: Bob Geffe, Jim Burpee and Mike Burns.
- INDUCTIONS: Nancy Bennett sponsored Scott Flyte who is in the
aviation business and Tami Coddington sponsored Marilyn Estes of
Raymond-Taylor Jewelers. Both
of our new members are anxious to serve the community and be involved in
HNR Club activities.
- PROGRAM: Morning Rotarian, Bob Conrad, introduced our program, Ted
and Susan Hill and Project Amigo in Colima, Mexico. Bob mentioned he finally Ògot itÓ
about Rotary when he visited Mexico and Project Amigo. This is an incredible program run
by the Colima Rotary Club which has several facets: 1) a medical and
dental care component 2) a literacy initiative, 3) the distribution of
donated items, 4) enrichment activities, 5) junior and high school
scholarships, 6) a college endowment fund, 7) homework clubs and academic
prizes and 8) a boarding house for young women students in Colima. Another aspect of this program is
the Volunteer Work Weeks which enable U.S and Canadian Rotarians to live
in Mexico for a week and work closely with Project Amigo while getting a
taste for living the same way a typical Mexican family lives. This project really gives one a
warm glow about being a Rotarian.
Another great program Rick!
- Remember next
weekÕs Program: Sara Olsen and the Rotaract trip to Ecuador.
- Emily Spencer
will be filling in on this newsletter next week as I will be in Cripple
Creek. Thanks Emily!!
The Four Way Test in
everything we do and say:
Ÿ
Is it the truth?
Ÿ
Is it fair to all concerned?
Ÿ
Will it build good will and better friendships?
Ÿ
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
