Speaker: Walt Brown, US FS/BLM geologist spoke of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) status for the Northern San Juan Basin for oil and gas permitting of Federal lands for Coal Bed Methane Development. The EIS did not involve private lands.  The public input process involved many meetings and tens of thousands of comments have been received, most requesting limiting of Fruitland Outcrop drilling, roads in road-less areas, and using directional drilling to reduce the # of drill pads. The EIS process was begun in Jan 02 and was completed in April 07.  Wells have an expected life of approx 40 years which will generate 2.5 trillion cubic feet of gas, worth an estimated $0.5 Billion.  The HD Mountains have tough conditions for drilling, with landslides and poor soils.  The EIS has been challenged by two parties and a final decision of record is expected in later summer 07.

Many questions followed Walt’s informative presentation.

Bud gave the lighter side of life in a joke.
