(03-22-07 Meeting)

Opening

Ward Holmes kicked the meeting off with the pledge.

Jan Measles’ words of wisdom spoke to creating ones own reality, not making compromises on what one wants in life and not standing in someone else’s shadow when one has ones own sunlight to create ones own shadow.

New Member Inductions -

David King, sponsored by Mike Matheson, was inducted into the club.  David enjoys community service which is one of the reasons he looked forward to joining Rotary. He has three children and is the president of Sky Ute Sand and Gravel.  David has spent most of his professional life in the construction industry and is educated as an engineer.  Mike Matheson confessed that he has only brought two members into the club during his long tenure; however, he focuses on quality rather than quantity.  David King is a fine example of this approach.

Announcements

Joseph (famed exchange student) – Had another interesting week of socializing and eating well.  Ward Holmes recognized Peter Marshall and unnamed others who put together Rotary’s annual report for the Durango Herald insert.  It did a great job of highlighting Rotary’s contributions to the community over the past twelve months.  It couldn’t help make you proud to be a Rotarian.  Fireside Chat will take place at the Diamond Belle in the Strater on April 9th, 2007 at 5:00 PM. Ward Holmes called for a membership vote to approve allowing the two Castle Rock Clubs to migrate out of District 5470 into the Denver District.  It passed unanimously.  Justin Osborne announced that Tim Sullivan made a contribution of $372.16 to our club as a result of the New Year’s Party.  $300 of that went immediately toward funding High Noon Rotary’s $500 contribution to the 4H Club’s San Juan Basin Talent Show.  This is the fourth year HNR has supported this youth project. Mark Prouty announced that he is spearheading a Job Fair on June 9th at the Fairgrounds’ Exhibit Hall.  He is looking for firms that would like to participate in this effort.  Loryn Kasten announced that the Rotaract Club is sponsoring a speed dating session on April 7, 2007 at the Diamond Circle Theatre.  There will be a wide range of ages represented at this $15.00 event. Charlie Albert announced the $15,000 RI grant award to HNR and the Aspen Club for a school bus for the Guerra Club.  Happy Dollars: Bill Cartwright was happy to announce that Wells Fargo insurance (formerly Accordia) became a $1,000 sponsor for the April 14th Monte Carlo night bringing fund raising by sponsorships to last year’s record of $4,700. Moni paid up for receiving her passport in time to accompany Angie Beach and 14 teenagers to Honduras and her sophomore daughter being invited into the National Honor Society. Dick Sullivan paid to honor Susan Tait, Board Secretary for Adaptive Sports (AS).  Susan gave HNR a beautiful clock to honor HNR’s significant contribution to the very successful funding raising for AS.  Dick Sullivan alone raised $7,000+ of the $9,000+ raised by HNR. Ward presented Dick Sullivan with the clock.  (I think they want us to help out next year as well.)

 Sgt. of Arms

Chandler Jackson    Jeanne Wheeldon paid because Moni received her passport so Jeanne would not have to go to Honduras in Moni’s place. Justin Osborne paid up for being gone for several weeks and not being able to attend HNR meetings. John Beekman, Justin Osborne and Bill Hobson paid up for birthdays. Judy Heasley had a happy dollar for not having to do the newsletter anymore. Cathy Crum paid up for last week’s birthday.  Bill Cartwright paid because he is thankful to be in the HNR club which has a no singing policy which the Bayfield Club just adopted.  Sherry Taber won the drawing but nothing else.

Program

Kathy Morris, 9R Safety Coordinator,    presented a program on 9R’s relatively new but very comprehensive safety program.   9/11, Columbine, and recent incidents at schools in Amish Country, Arkansas and Bailey, Colorado amongst others, highlighted the need for such an effort.   Kathy has developed a very participatory and collaborative program that includes all school sites in 9R as well as Ignacio and Bayfield.  The community appreciates her efforts on this important program.

Closing

Although absent last week, Bud was called on to present his joke. Bud explained that he spent his one week off seeking good jokes. This one about 10 year old boys and their “wimpy” dads nearly drove the groan meter off the charts.
