(05-03-2007 Meeting)

Opening

Ward led with the pledge at the Railroad museum. Great ambience lousy acoustics! (If this newsletter resembles the actual meeting at all it is purely coincidental since I couldn’t hear anything.)

Ted Robson told us that we should emulate the bluebird and the horse, we all would be happier.

Justin Osborne paid for him and his wife Tammy completing a two hour Lamaze class in just 48 minutes. Lauren Kasten for closing on her first house. Emily Spencer asked for prayers for her sister who has diabetes. Dan Morganstern enjoyed a good concert. Bob Salzer enjoyed an intimate meal with 148 4 H kids at the Doubletree.  Bob also sang the praises of the Doubletree and how well they handled that many people.  Charlie Albert is developing 969 Main into three condominiums.  Bud Deering told us how he spent a July night in 1950 in Pueblo, Colorado greasing train engines.  That experience even made the Marine Corps look good to Bud. Deborah Foti of the Morning Club announced that the District Training sessions are really worthwhile.  The drawing was held and Bill Cartwright’s ticket was drawn.  He answered the trivia question correctly: Where did the name Rotary come from?  It came from the fact that the meetings rotated to different locations.

Program

Luke, Niko and Sarah, all of the high school shared with us their adventures on a two week kayaking trip to China.  They were exposed to a lot for 16/17 year olds. A 17 hour flight to get there. Beijing – lots of smog.  Often they did not know what they were eating.  In some places there was abject poverty. The Chinese sometimes did not allow cameras to be used. The three were tricked into teaching English to middle schoolers. During the entire two weeks they only had one day of sunshine.  Three countries participated in the competition: China, the US and Slovakia.  The biggest name there was the Slovak. Sarah was the only blonde girl that many Chinese had ever seen.  This was a life changing experience for this kids and it was great to see how excited they all were about the trip.

Closing

Bud first talked about the 401keg retirement fund that made the case that one should invest in beer since the return was so much greater than some other stock investments.  After investing, drink the beer and recycle the cans because that also pays better than such stocks as Enron, Worldcom, and United Airlines.  Next there was a tale about Forrest Gump going to heaven and answering three questions asked by St. Peter before he was allowed to enter through the pearly gates. What are the two days in the week begin with T? Obviously, today and tomorrow.  How many seconds in a year? Again obviously the answer is12. January second, February second, etc.  What is God’s first name?  Andy.

Where does he get these things?

Respectfully Submitted, Wayne M. Bedor
