Program

Steve Redding told us a “fairy tale” of the perfect library:  a place where adults, teens and children could enjoy the vast resourses of books, computers, CDs, classes, lectures, meetings, the SW History collection, Audio Books, magazines and a Friends of the Library Store in a picture perfect riverside setting.  Steve said this dream could become a reality for Durango if Referred Measure 2A is passed, allowing the city to issue bonds for the new library.  This is NOT a new tax.  The actual tax increase was implanted in 2005 by a .5% sales tax increase.  Please meet at 9am Saturday at the Methodist Church to assist the “Yes for the Durango Library Committee” in putting out yard signs.

Sherry Taber showed a Powerpoint that outlined how Durango’s current library is 99 years old.  The current library was built in 1907 by a grant from Andrew Carnegie.  Although it has been renovated many times, its current size of 15,000 square feet is too small for the Durango community.  Growth rate studies have indicated that Durango needs a 47,000 square foot library.  This expanded size would elimate the need for the library to rent space from 9R or the Rec Center.  The new library would still have the same number of service staff and would have a substantial parking area.

Ward closed the meeting.  We missed Bud.
