Opening

Ward Holmes led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Jan Measles inspired us with two quotes. The latter went something along the lines of: “May your beer cooler always be in the shade” Good advice.

Visiting Rotarians -

Announcements

Ward announced that the next Fireside Chat would be held @ the 3rd floor library @ FLC on August 11th. Our red badge members and all members are welcome.

In Tim’s absence, Ward reported that the initial tally on the Golf fundraiser proceeds was about $26K. Ward thanked individually the outstanding committee members that made this such a successful event. A reminder was given that all silent auction bidders should settle up promptly. Successful bidders have been notified. The final proceeds should be known in about a week.

Ward also thanked those that responded to his e-mail urging Rotarians to contribute to their Paul Harris Fellowship. Presentations of the Paul Harris Fellowship will occur during the District Governors visit to the club on August 17th. Ward reminded everyone that registration was available for the upcoming District Conference in Grand Junction.

Rick Routh asked that if any-one had suggestions for a program to please let him know.

Justin Osborne announced that a date had been selected for the annual Holiday party – Thursday, December 7th. Mark your calendars. Justin also let us know that the Ducks Unlimited annual banquet would be held at the college on August 12th. It was suggested that Justin be fined for that blatant but worthy advertisement.

Cathy Crum announced that the Student Exchange team lead would be selected very soon and the team assembled. We should expect a visit from the team from the Czech Republic and another country – apparently not Latvia.

Chip Lile urged that a Rotarian help out as a Host Family for our in-coming student from France. Please call Chip if you can help. The student is coming soon and we have as yet not identified a host family.

Ward presided over the induction of Clint Jaworski – who was for a brief moment the most recent Rotarian ever to be inducted in the world. Clint was introduced by his lovely wife – Leanna. As a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Narrow Gauge, Clint was looking forward to contributing to Rotary.

Sgt. of Arms

Chandler Jackson looked to Ken Fusco first for dollars in light of his birthday and anniversary. In true Rotary tradition, there was some dispute about the anniversary. Celebrating birthdays in July: Ken Fusco, Bill Cartwright, Brian Meyers, Steve Wheeldon and Monte Bjorlin. Their generous contributions were exactly what Chandler was looking for. In the paper – Phil Bryson and Mike Matheson.

Happy dollars from Ward on the regretful departure of his boss. Also from Mike McGuire, who recounted a very scary experience with a bee and from Wayne Bedor – celebrating a 32nd wedding anniversary. More Happy Dollars – Monte Bjorlin – for a first time winning golf team, Tom Galbraith – for clearly passing Susan’s screen test, Bill Cartwright – for outbidding Steve Govreau on the gourmet dinner, graciously offered by Jim Burpee, Rick Routh – who celebrated 16 years in the Northwest, Dave Farmer – on behalf of the success recently in Europe of his two former students – Tom Danielson & Floyd Landis.

Mark Donohue sank a miracle nerf –ball putt and donated the $13 winnings back to Rotary.

Program:

John Anderson introduced Arkady Fomin with the Conservatory of Music. Arkady provided a brief history of the Conservatory. Of particular interest was the growth of the student body from 28 to now – 136 students – 45 of which are from the Durango area. The financial impact of Music in the Mountains, without which the Conservatory would not exist, is estimated at $4M. The impact on our cultural climate is immense. Arkady is originally from Latvia and is in his 10th and “tense” year with the Conservatory. Arkady was appreciative of the staff of Music in the Mountains and mentioned especially Louisa Drouet and Susan Landers. We were then introduced to and entertained by four exceptional young artists. Rotarians responded with a standing ovation for each performance.

Closing

Although the response to Bud Deering recalling of what may become you from an ex was not a standing ovation, it was appreciated in its own unique way. Thank you Bud.

Ward wished us a great week and then rang the bell to release us.
