Announcements

Ward reminded everyone that the Fireside Chat will be held TONIGHT at 6 PM, 3rd Floor, John Reed Library at FLC, Thursday, August 10th.  Red badge members and others are welcome.  The Library is located next to the College Union Building in the center core of campus, flag poles out front.  Contact Justin Osborne with questions.

Ward reminded everyone that next Thursday, August 17th, 19 High Noon Rotarians will be presented at the meeting at which the District Governor will be present.  The District Governor will also announce the theme for the next year.

Ward and Justin Osborn reported on Chip Lile.  He is doing better and Chip is also taking care of a snafu regarding the exchange student from France.

Ward reminded everyone that the District Conference is in Grand Junction on September 22-23.  Register on our website or the District site.

Ward announced reminded everyone about the Wednesday August 16th pot luck at Rotary Park for the district Governor.  Our Club was asked to bring heavy appetizers.  Justin Osborne is the contact.  Please let him know what you are bringing (so we don’t have too many deviled eggs!).  Time:  4-7, dinner “around” 6 PM.

Tim Walsworth announced that the final tally from the July golf tournament was $26,066.01.  The United Way/Club split is $13,000+ each.  $1,000 more than last year.  Tim thanked the golf committee and there was a hearty round of applause.

Worthy of a fine, Tim Walsworth noted that United Way and Four Corners Broadcasting’s Radiothon is September 8.

Justin Osborne also chanced a fine by announcing the Ducks Unlimited event is Saturday, August 12, 5:30 PM, Fort Lewis College Union Ballroom.  Proceeds support DU’s wetland and wildlife habitat work.  For tickets call Justin.

Moni Bjorlin joined the “fine group” and announced that the First national Bank’s United Way Pacesetter event is a “kiddie carnival” in their parking lot, tomorrow, August 11, from 11 AM – 1 PM.

Tami Codington announced a SKA-BQ was being held to benefit the victims of the Central Hotel fire.

Daniel Scalva, a Rotary Scholarship recipient, pitched the La Plata County Fair this weekend and urged everyone to attend Saturday, August 12th’s beef sale/auction at 6 PM.

Induction

Mark Prouty presided over the induction of Thomas CrabbSteve Osborne described Tom as a developer and “easy to work with”.  Tom has been a ‘regular” for several months and was a Rotarian in Coral Gables, Florida.  In his response, Tom said it will take awhile to get used to his dry sense of humor (for example, he said he was raised in “Misery”) and at the urging of Nancy Vanderwal, Mark and Tom sealed Tom’s induction with a “hug.”

Delayed Words of Inspiration

Jan Measles was late to the meeting so the inspirational time was delayed.  She opened with informing the Club that yesterday she was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She followed this announcement with a quote from Washington Irving…”Relief in Change.”  All Rotarians expressed well wishes to Jan after the meeting and know she has the full support and prayers of all Club members, many of whom are cancer survivors.

Sgt. of Arms

Chandler Jackson AGAIN exercised his power by fining anyone who wasn't wearing his/her pin – this looks like a trend.  Chandler recognized Jan Measles for her advertisement in the Durango Herald, which displays the Rotary seal.  He asked all at her table to throw in a buck.    Happy dollars were plentiful:  Dick Sullivan was happy is daughter is here; Miles Bruno tossed in bucks as he is happy to be back in Durango after weeks of travel; Tom Brossia encouraged everyone to pick-up on Moni Bjorlin’s Letter to the Editor encouraging people to send in letters that are positive.  Sara Olsen was happy for her 3-week experience on the Colorado River and that her daughter didn’t choose an expensive interior design school!  Kathy Firestone was happy to be back in Durango and happy her granddaughter had two successful surgeries.  Moni Bjorlin’s daughter, Chelsea was happy she did well in a summer class…and last but not least, Bud is happy that Judy came back from Denver and he doesn’t have to feed 722 hummingbirds 3x a day...but he did catch the bird, Red Baron, with a fishing net! Steve Govreau was the winning ticket this week, but missed his 3 chances in nerf-ball putting – some said it was using a yellow, rather than a pink ball!!  Bob Griffith was celebrating a birthday.  Tom Brossia, Doug Lashley and Greg Lyman all were celebrating wedding anniversaries, and Tom Brossia, Mark Larson, Peter Marshall and Jan Measles were all recognized for their Club Anniversary.

Program

Emily Spencer introduced Chrissie Nelson-Cohen from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.  Chrissie is the convention coordinator for the National Narrow Gauge Convention being held in Durango August 21-26.  She is also a member of the Camp Towns Ladies and was in her 1800’s hat and dress.  She presented the history of the railroad in Durango and an overview of the Transcontinental RR’s growth and connectivity of the west – especially how fast the ability to obtain goods and services grew through entrepreneurship.  She further described General Palmer’s impact on the Denver/Rio Grande RR and the efforts to build the line in La Plata County.  She encouraged all to visit the RR Museum for interesting tidbits and to view artifacts.  This is the 125th anniversary of the D&SNGRR in Durango (1881) and they are having a year filled with celebration.  Part of the convention will be 12:30 and 3 PM showings of western films featuring the train.  If non-conventioneers want to attend, she thought there would be ample seating.  Also, the convention trade show with 90 exhibitors is open to the public on August 25 & 26.  For more information refer to the website:  www.narrowgauge2006.com.  At the end of the formal presentation, Rotarians responded with a number of questions.

Closing

And once again….Here’s Bud" –  This week Bud set the scene about a young girl who wanted to be a t4eacher.  Then he described the process she was to go through for dealing with students.  At the end of the tale, he gave it to Tammy Osborne to use share with other teachers when she begins her new job.

Ward wished everyone a great day and rang the bell to release us.

Respectfully Submitted,

Judy Heasley
