Announcements

Folsom Field:  Ward thanked those that participated in the Saturday spruce-up and repair of facilities at Folsom Field.  Additionally, J.B. presented certificates of thanks to Tom Brossia, Kevin Schneider and Dean Brookie for their efforts.

High Noon Rotary/United Way Golf Tournament:  Tim Walsworth updated us on the planning progress regarding hole sponsors, golf teams etc.  Still needed are sponsors, door prizes and golfers.  The even begins on Saturday August 9th, with an 8:00 AM Shotgun start at Dalton Ranch.  The fee is $125.00 per golfer.

Perfect Attendance:  A number of High Nooners achieved perfect attendance in Jeff Brown's year and Chessa read a list.  Pins recognizing this accomplishment are forthcoming.

Make-up meetings:  Steve Govreau needs your make-up information in order to keep attendance accurate.  When you submit info, tell him when, what the activity was.

Peddling across Colorado for 4-H:  Bob Salzer raised over $4,000.00 to rebuild 4-H pens at the fairgrounds, from pledges made as a result of his 554 mile ride.  His trip started in Cortez and included Telluride, Montrose, Delta, North Rim of the Black Canyon,  Gunnison, Buena Vista and ended at Copper Mountain.  Bob suffered one encounter with the pavement and some really lousy weather (snow, wind, cold, rain, sleet) along the way.  Thanks Bob!

Bess is Blue:  Having completed all the new member requirements, Bess Maisel was presented with her Blue Badge by Jill and her sponsor Arvella Higby.

Invocation Sign up:  If you are so inclined, please get your name on the schedule of those who will give the invocation and lead the pledge.

Scholarship Winner:  Sherry Taber announced that our club's nominee, Sara Mahle, received a substantial scholarship, in the $9 - $10k range.  She will study sociology starting 2004.

Mentoring works!!:  Steve Redding announced that two of last years recipients of club scholarships were kids that were part of the diversion program at La Plata Youth Services.  A big thank you to all the mentors in the High Noon Rotary Club!

Ice Cream Social:  Saturday, July 12th at the library!!

Sergeant At Arms

Bill Wright is this year's SAA, ably assisted by Bud Deering.  Birthdays recognized were Charlie Albert and David Downs.  Happy dollars were contributed by Dean, John M., Wynn, Tami and Tom G.  Rotarians without pins were 'encouraged' to put a buck in the pot.

Program

Chessa introduced District Governor 5470, Laura Thompson, to the traditional standing ovation.  She thanked the crowd and began to tell us of the mission of the new President of RI, Jonathan Majiyagbe.  More on the President @ http://rotarypresidents.org/2003majiyagbe/.

President Majiyagbe's theme is 'Lend a Hand' and his focus is on four areas.  Poverty, Health Services, Illiteracy and the family of Rotary.  Laura explained in more detail that the focus on illiteracy will lead to more people being able to get and hold a good job.  Health Services will include improving access to health care, an effort to reduce infant mortality and the challenge of HIV.  The Family of Rotary will include taking care of and including family members in Rotary, as well as looking after former Rotarians.

Laura confirmed the dates of the District Conference, September 26-28 in La Junta.  Go to http://www.rotary5470.org/conferences/2003/images/2003reg.pdf for on line registration and more details.  There will be lots of activities in addition to conference meetings, including historical site visits and a golf tournament.  The conference will be held at Otero Junior College.  There are 354 hotel rooms and a KOA in the area, so book early!

Laura told us a bit about the International Conference in Brisbane, Australia.  Great facilities, great weather etc.  Sadly, RI President Majiyagbe's wife died just 2 days after the conference.

Laura told us a bit about the 'E-club' concept and how on such club is now planning to have physical meetings at least once a month.

Her district goals include ensuring the success of Centennial projects and an effort to plant trees in areas burned in last year's fires.

She spoke further about District Simplified Grants, where the requesting club is required to put up equity, along with the request for a grant.

GSE news includes an incoming team from Milan, Italy, that will be in the district in time for the district conference.  After a few questions, Chessa thanked District Governor Thompson, who received another standing 'O'.

With nothing more for the good of Rotary, Chessa told us about asking a handsome middle-aged man to paint her house and closed the meeting.
