Durango High Noon Rotary
Newsletter for July 25, 2002
"You don't get
to choose how you're going to die. Or
when.
You can only decide
how you're going to live. Now."
Joan Baez, singer.
[Now you know why you
joined Rotary!]
President Jeff Brown
opened the meeting, we heard an invocation, and
pledged our
Allegiance.
Guests:
Olivia Wheeling and
Hanna Baird were introduced by Bob Salzer.
Hanna is
a La Plata Fair
Attendant this year, and Olivia is a granddaughter of a
former Club
member. Howard Hughes was the guest of
his high-school
chum
Len Goebel. [You can
see Len's HS picture in our new
Directory.] Dean
Brookie introduced
Mike Moran from Communit
y Connections, and
our
regular guests
included Joe Colgan and Kenneth Walker from Ardmore
OK.
Nancy Hammond brought
her son Nathan and Steve Redding bought lunch for
his father Bill. Finally, Charlie Taylor and Mike Swilling
from
Kiwanis
promoted ticket sales
for their 16th annual "Pluck a Duck"
fundraiser.
Business:
Past President Tom
Galbraith is our Chairman for International
Service.
As promised from last
week, he outlined his goals and objectives for the
year. Please see the attachment for his
statement. Other HNRC
Committee
Chairpersons will be similarly reporting to the Club during
the next few weeks.
Past President Steve
Wheeldon presented his vision of our HNRC
Foundation. The Club Foundation would strive to acquire
interest-generating
assets to support the good deeds of our Club.
Sorry
I don't have more
details for this newsletter -- but it is a terrific
idea and I hope the
details are developed sooner rather than later.
John Anderson reporte
d on the organization
of the La Plata County
Disaster Recovery
Coalition, as first reported in our newsletter last
week. The group is comprised of more than 40
community, social
service,
and religious
organizations. The mission is: "To help the survivor
resolve those serious
disaster related needs which have not been
met".
John Anderson,
representing High Noon Rotary, co chairs the Coalition.
Pam Moore, Rick
Routh, Bob Chaput, Terry Aspin, Tom Brossia, and Bart
Cross represent the
committee for our Club. Anyone interested in joining
them should contact
John at
anderson@frontier.net
Mayor Joe Colgan (I
know he's an ex-, but he is not a has-been!) is our
District Lt.
Governor. He announced the formation of
a
District-level
Rotary Wildfire
Relief fund. Already several Rotary
Clubs across
the
country have promised
financial assistance.
Chessa Gill is
preparing for her turn at the helm b
y forming a committee
to review/revise our
By-Laws. Smart lady! The By-Laws are
found at the
back of the
Membership Directory and Chessa is really looking for help
on this project.
E-mail her at
jctgill@frontier.net
Terry Aspin shared
with the Club the latest activities of Habitat for
Humanity of La Plata
County. They are building an adobe home
in
Forest
Lakes for a lucky
young couple and welcome volunteers each and every
Saturday for the next
two months. Contact Terry at
terry@banksanjuans.com
One of the most
difficult positions to serve in our Club must be that of
heading up the Golf
Tournament. Melisa Caskey has risen to
the
challenge and needs
help from all of us. More door prizes
as
well as
people who know how
to swing a club are needed for this August 17 major
event. Please help her at
www.durangohighnoonrotary.com
