Durango High Noon Rotary Club

Minutes of our meeting, August 30, 2001

Steve opened the meeting with a moment of reflection and led us in the pledge. Guests were introduced and those that signed-in included:

· Judith Reynolds

· Justin Bradshaw

· Clint Kinney

· Ken Fusco

We were reminded of the District Convention, October 5-7 at the Peaks in Telluride.

Brian Myers announced another Locks for Life trigger lock give away this Saturday at Wal-Mart, 10:00 AM 2:00 PM. There about locks 2,500 remaining.

Brian told us a pre-season football joke, Broncos Rule.

Melisa and Missy told us that this year s golf tournament was a hit and indicated that proceeds from the auction were down a bit from last year and asked for suggestions for items for next year that would inspire us .

Jenny Kane announced the San Juan Mountain Association Share the Trails Team Triathlon, September 22, 2001, to celebrate National Public Lands Day. Teams of three compete, with one member run/walking, one riding horseback and one riding a bike. More info? Call 970-385-1210. Jenny would be thrilled to have a Rotary team(s) compete.

Jeff Brown read a letter of thanks for the Study Connection for the support of HNR. Steve then thanked Jeff for filling in as club leader at the joint meeting with Kiwanis.

Our Fun Committee Chair, Jeannie W. asked us to confirm our reservations to Forever Plaid at the Melodrama on September 7. Tix are $20.00 each, with $10.00 of each ticket going back to the club. Great fun, fellowship and music from the 50 s. So, turn in your forms and get your tickets paid for!

A Biker Fashion Show was next with Pam and Carl modeling the latest in motorcycle attire. And, they then proceeded to dole out the fines.

· Jack Walls for a mention in the paper, even if some facts were incorrect.

· Bob Volger, for his son s tennis prowess. Bob assessed himself a fine for celebrating 55 years and told us his Secret of Life is not to take yourself too seriously.

· Bob Chaput was fined for not repaying a loan used to purchase golf mulligans.

· Steve Redding chipped in after announcing his cruise through the inside passage in Alaska.

· Steve Osborne was nailed for getting a pilot s license and promptly used a certificate of dubious origin to avoid the fine.

Pam announced the performances this weekend of the Hardly Angels. They are scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday at the Sky Ute Casino South Lot and Sunday after the parade through town at the Durango Mall, around 1:30 PM.

Tickets were drawn and several Rotarians had the chance to answer questions, mostly incorrectly, with Miss Jane winning a Harley book.

Ron H. told us his secret of life was not to eat yellow snow and Nancy H. said her secret was music. Can you remember which one the club appreciated?

Steve asked Jack and Melisa to introduce the speaker, Judith Reynolds, political cartoonist for the Herald. She is a former teacher and the last time she attended a Rotary meeting, the fines were a quarter.

Judith enlightened us on the difference between the funnies and political cartoons (pc s). PC s are often on the editorial page and the creator may have a different political stance than the owners of the paper. PC s are basically pictorial political statements, intended to be one-sided and biased.

There are only 6 female political cartoonists in the country and she is quite proud to be one of them.

Political cartoonists share a social conscience and are political junkies, using common symbols, clichés and stereotypes to get their point across. Reynolds indicated that text-free cartoons are the top of the craft.

We learned that Thomas Nast, one of the earliest cartoonists created the image that we know today as Santa Claus and was first to us an elephant in reference to the Republican party.

When asked why there are so few women in the business, Judith thought it might be that women are instilled with the adage that, If you can t say something good about someone&&..

Steve thanked Judith, presented her with a Rotary mug and let her know that it would be nice if Rotary appeared in a future cartoon.

Steve Redding and Paulette Church were belatedly recognized for their perfect attendance, since they were not present last week to receive their award.

Steve asked Jim Williams what was happening in the stock market. Jim said it was going down and then distracted us with a joke about our past president and his wife the Senator from New York.

Rick O Block announced the Mercy Health Foundation Golf Tournament September 15th and urged us to attend a meeting (not sure where) this coming Tuesday night, with Jim Isgar dealing with health insurance. There is a big bill working it s way through the state house and it should impact all of us one-way or the other. Rural Colorado suffers from a lack of health care coverage, with most decisions being made in major metro areas. Here s our chance to have some input.

Steve Redding asked me to remind the trash team that trash pick-up is scheduled for Saturday, September 29th. The day will start with breakfast at Steve s house and 7:30 AM

Next week s meeting will include some song and dance and should be entertaining. With nothing more for the good of Rotary, Steve rang the meeting to a close.
