Durango High Noon Rotary Club
June 21, 2001
Our Illustrious President opened the meeting with a clang. Hard to believe
his term is nearing an end, he still packs a lot of punch.
We received the sad news of Bill Mauer's passing June 20, 2001 at 10:05 p.m. Services were held over the weekend at First Presbyterian. He will always be with us in our hearts.
"Break a leg to Mike McGuire who had knee surgery Thursday.
Guest included Kenneth Walker from Ardmore, Oklahoma, Roy Gust from Phoenix, Sue Putnam from Colorado Springs, CO. John Marshall introduced his childhood friend, Frank Vail, complete with pictures of them in younger days.
We welcomed Tonya Kahler into the club today. Tonya is Executive Director of the Humane Society. A graduate of FLC, she's held positions as a detox counselor, animal control officer, curator and zookeeper. Welcome aboard!
Camp Counselors are needed July 8,9 and 10 for a kids camp sponsored by ATF, Colorado State Patrol and High Noon Rotary. The camp will be held near Chimney Rock. Contact Mike McGuire when he hobbles back or at home.
Tom Brossia is signing up Rotarians to work at the World Cup.
Sam Stites and John Marshall would like to start a fly fishing camp at
John's house. Contact them if interested in helping out.
If you haven't already done so, a signup table will be open at our next
meeting for the August 18th golf tournament. Remember to also signup for
auction items.
Our speaker was Calvin Cooke, President/CEO of Brainstorm Industries, an Internet development and access company formed in 1998 in Durango. Calvin now partners with Melissa's husband, Brad Caskey. High speed (fiber optics) technology was only a gleam in his eye when he came, but Durango made it a reality. The telecommunications industry is not fun. They've experienced lots of broken promises on fiber optics. Calvin did publicly thank Dave Potter and LPEA for stepping up to the plate to make this a reality. We Fiber is set from Albuquerque to Grand Junction, they're working on Farmington as we speak. Brainstorm's philosophy is double the speed for less cost. Thanks Calvin, you really know your stuff.
