HIGH NOON ROTARY
MARCH 1, 2001
DOUBLETREE HOTEL
President Tom Galbraith, clad in summer shorts and shirt, opened the meeting by clanging the bell * visiting continued so he clanged it again. Bud Deering offered the prayer and led the pledge of allegiance.
Visitors were introduced - Mike McLaughlin and Jim Reser made up from the Durango Rotary Club. Missy Rodey was with us (United Way Honcho). Conrad Johnson, Tina and John Beekman, Jim Martin, and Sherry Taber were with us. Jo Bridges, Mary Jo, and Diane Bower came in from the Pagosa Springs Club to promote their Saint Patty's Day fund raiser for March 17 - - their club raised a bunch of money last year for their charitable endeavors, and it looks like more of the same this year. You can buy "funny" money tickets, gamble with it for real and have a blast!
Bud Poe introduced Guy Drew from Cortez (McElmo Canyon)who has started about 20 acres of grapes to feed his soon to start up winery* a plus for South West Colorado.
We were reminded that the "Mexican Food Fiesta" will need all the working hands for this April 5, 2001 money raiser * Take note, this will not be cinco de Mayo * it will be cinco de Abril. Whatever you plan to do, please call Mark Prouty and tell him.
Steve Wheeldon and Jill introduced our newest Rotarian, John Beckman, of the CPA firm of Frederick-Zink-Elliot. He got a shirt, a book a pin of some gender and he made a brief statement. Welcome, John. Kevin Bruce was here today, collected fines and generally tried to weasel out of paying anything from his own pocket. Good to see you Kevin.
The Student Business Incubator Program for the high school looks to be in good hands * volunteers in the professions were asked to turn in their names. Call Steve Govreau 382-0703 now!!!
Wayne Bedor introduced Tonya Kahler, Director of the Animal Control which is both a city and county function for controlling the stray animal problems that arise on a daily basis. The facility for handling pets and feral animals is near the high bridge just north of WalMart. Part of the funding for maintaining the facility comes from a single thrift store located here. Animals are impounded for 5 days and then offered for adoption through public announcements on the radio and in the Durango Herald. Questions from the audience were thoughtful about the ongoing problems that face the staff. Great program!!
