HIGH NOON ROTARY
November 30, 2000
Tom was in fine form as he opened the meeting this day. The Holiday served him well. Tom asked Jay Hwang to open with Prayer and Pledge.
We then heard a report that Roy Crow is in the Hospital recovering from a serious bout of Gallbladder problems. He was in Intensive Care and now appears to be on the road to recovery.
Tom mentioned that he was a bad influence on a number of Rotarians. The latest person he talked with was Don Moomey. Don was the Commander of the Highway Patrol here in Durango and a Past President of the club (88-89). Don and his wife Judy were influenced by Tom to go sailing and they are now in Puerto Vallarta living at a Marina on their boat. Michael Mohr was in La Paz yesterday on his boat. Joe Brown is about 350 miles south of France on his way to the Canary Islands. Tom mentioned that he has gotten an E-Mail from Pete Holton just to check in and see how things are. Bill Wright then mentioned that he had heard from Doctor Sanders and he is in Saipan and doing well.
Tom then plugged the Fireside Chat to be held at his house Monday the 4th of December. The address is 399 West Park B-4. The event is for all new members and prospective members to help in understanding Service Above Self. We then had a Badging ceremony in which George Litow was given his Blue Badge. Jill Bruce presented this man with his Badge. We then met, Kelly Davidson, our newest member. Kelly was sponsored by Len Goebel. Kelly was a founding member of the Angle Fire Club in New Mexico. Kelly has spent more than twelve years in the Ski Industry. He has served as a marketing person at Angle Fire and Cooper Mountain. Alas, Kelly has changed occupation to that of a land developer and Real Estate Broker.
We then remembered to introduce our guests. Arvella Higby returned to have lunch with Chessa. Jack Walls, the past DG, was in attendance again. Phil McClendon, from Pagosa, was with us for lunch. Leonard Gray, the husband of Margaret, joined us. Lisa Davidson, John Beekman, and Bill Krupke were there.
Dave Brooks informed the Club about our Christmas event. The Party is planned for the 10th of December at the Doubletree. A social hour will begin at five and dinner will be served at six. The bill of fare is rib eye and salmon. Dave needs to know your choice and Monday at the Fireside is the last chance you have to sign up. Karen L'Argent spoke to the need to get items for the auction. They needed to be taken to First National Bank by noon on Friday the 8th. Petra challenged the club to get behind the event with her statement that everyone at her table all signed up to give an item for the auction. The Christmas event is our club's fund raiser for International projects. Also, it becomes a great fun event as Santa does appear. If you are bringing your Children to met Santa, please bring a gift so that Santa can share the Spirit of Christmas giving.
Carl Clark enlisted the aid of Mike McGuire in the collection of fines. Mike paid for the good work of Jeff Brown in his efforts to do positive reenforcement with school age children about wearing seat belts. Jeff spent one morning at the grade schools handing out two dollar bills to those kids wearing a seat belt. Chessa Gill paid a fine for her Birthday. Nancy Hammond solicited a fine for Carl as he failed to show up to do the Bell Ringing.
Our speaker of the day was Kendall Blanchard, President of Fort Lewis College. His message this day was to inform us of the five-year plan they have developed for the school. The school mission is a commitment to a liberal arts education. This is not about training students for a specific job but about equipping students to go out and create jobs. Kendall feels that the college has achieved a reputation as a leading Liberal Arts institution. He would like this reputation to be nationally known. This would help find students who are committed to Fort Lewis and a quality undergraduate experience. He feels that the investment in capital projects has had a positive effect on the school. Kendall wants the college to have total access to new technology. Kendall feels that an investment in staff salaries and benefits is critical to this plan. This leads to fund raising and budgets which are part of the plan. Thanks, Dr. Blanchard.
Proposed new member. Arvella Higby has been proposed for membership call Jill if you have any concerns.
SPECIAL NOTE: No meeting on the 7th as we are having the Christmas Party on the 10th at 5:00 p.m.
ONE FINAL NOTE: "To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity."
