HIGH NOON ROTARY

September 21, 2000

Tom was back to lead the troops this day. He survived and solved his plumbing problem. Does anyone know the depths of this man's genius? He did open the meeting with an invocation and the pledge. Tom asked for an update by the caring committee. There was none offered. Tom noted that Jorge Gallardo had sent a thank you card for the card we sent him.

Guests were then introduced. Joe Colgin from the evening club joined us. He was introduced by Rick O'Block who gave such a flowery introduction that Joe responded he was sorry, but Rick's grades could not be changed at this late date. Seems Joe taught Rick at Fort Lewis. Speaking of Joe Colgin, he will be going as the Team Leader on the Group Study Exchange to Mexico. He tried for the one to Israel, but admitted he would like to go to Mexico. He got his wish. LaVern Nelson, a senior active, also from the evening club, joined us this day. Chris George, a student at Fort Lewis and nephew of Tom Galbraith was there. Ken Fusco from Fort Lauderdale, Florida joined us for lunch and fellowship. Gordon Smith from Oakland California joined the group. Brian Kimmel continued his near-perfect attendance by being present again this day.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The meeting for next week will be at the Fairgrounds to support the Kiwanis Pancake day. We will have reserved seating and the club will pay the cost of tickets. High Noon as always is the time.

Tom mentioned the letter of Thanks we got from the Durango High School Girls Softball Team. We gave them $250 to help start the team. Tom mentioned the Polio Plus goal that was set in 1985 to raise 120 million dollars to eradicate Polio. Rotary raised 240 million at that time. The founder of this effort Dr. Hector Acuna will be at the Conference in Vail and those attending will get the chance to meet him. There are other things going on with this effort so call Tom.

The GSE Team deadline has been extended to capture more Team Members. A professional less than forty, non Rotarians, can join the group.

Pam Taylor is the Assistant District Governor for Cortez, Telluride, and Dolores. Bill Tarpley is looking for another from our club to do Durango and Pagosa Springs. The volunteer needs to be a Past President of a club.

Recreation is on the rise. Pam Copeland is heading up a Motorcycle fall color ride on the 21st of October. This is a Saturday. Tom said, "Mark your calendars and buy a Harley." George Litow spoke about the Horseback ride that is coming up soon. Tom mentioned the Evening Clubs Golf Tournament coming up soon.

We then had the Wheel of Misfortune. Today the goal was to raise some cash to help with the mentoring program. Mike McGuire has expanded the club program to include a ride along for the kids some club members are mentoring. They will be paired with some younger highway Patrol Officers who can serve as role models or an adult who cares. The process began with Tom Galbraith. He paid twenty bucks to have Steve Wheeldon take the chance. Steve paid 24 dollars for Bob Chaput to take the chance. Bob paid 25 bucks to have Bud Poe take the chance. Bud paid 30 bucks and gave the chance to Marv who was busy setting up the projector for our speaker. Kevin spun and Marv will greet folks next week at the Fairgrounds. We also got fines from Steve Govreau and Brian Meyers.

Tom Galbraith then told the club that the La Villa Breakfast program grant is finished and on its way to Rotary International. Tom also mentioned the new Habitat housing being built and their need for people to hammer and saw.

Marv then introduced our speaker of the day, Trish Gavelda. She works for Local Affairs in Emergency Management. She spoke to us about her Group Study Exchange visit to Brazil. The purpose of the Group Study Exchange is to promote world understanding and peace. Trish was impressed by the people she met during her visit to Brazil. She felt that the people had a real sense of Nationalism. Their economy is strong second to the United States for the western part of the Globe. They are the largest exporters of oranges. They export a large amount of beef. They have begun to move into the coffee business with large cash crops. Trish felt the country was very sophisticated. She was impressed with the lushness of the country. She was thankful for the experience and felt the cross-cultural experience and the exchange of ideas were wonderful. Thanks, Trish.
