HIGH NOON ROTARY

AUGUST 5, 1999

Wow, did we have a good time in Rotary this day. Pete opened the meeting with a clang. He asked Carl Clark to lead in prayer. He put Jeff Jaeger on the spot by asking him to recite the Four Way Test. Jeff got three of the four and he did receive applause.

We introduced our guests, as the tradition of Rotary requires. We had Jay Hwang return for the third time as the guest of Joe Thompson. Bill Wright noted that the bulletin failed to mention this young man’s prior attendance. Mark Maddocks, Norm Goldman and George Townsend joined our group this day for lunch. Adam Duke, a scholarship recipient, was there. He stated his thanks to the group for their assistance. Adam will be off to Omaha to study at Creighton. Linda Thompson joined Robin Jackman and Robin’s husband, Curt Hamblin, for lunch. Meredith Mapel joined Dave James for lunch.

Pete Sanders then offered a thank you and the club applauded Dave Farmer for his graciousness in hosting fund day at Durango Sports Club. David is a handball champion in his division. He is off to challenge other finalists in the regionals. Good luck, David.

Mike Matheson mentioned that Shirley Thompson is recovering from surgery. He asked for prayers and good thoughts for her.

Dave James got to speak up as Petra was gone. He stated that all the Hole sponsors and teams are finalized. He feels that we have great auction items and we could make a bundle on this event. Plan to attend the event August 21st at Tamarron.

Her Royal Princess, Jeannie Wheeldon, was given the floor. She read off the names of the Red Badges that we have in the club. A few need only attend the Board Meeting and they will become blue badges. She asked when the board meeting was going to be held and alas, a miss, and a two dollar fine. We held the drawing and for no real reason, Jeannie gave the winner, Pattie Burkholder, the prize: two tickets to Durango Pro Rodeo.

We inducted two new members. Tom Brossia was introduced by Burt Coleman. Seems they are neighbors and Burt decided to sponsor Tom. Burt asked Tom why he came to Durango. The answer was the lack of lift lines at Purgatory, gold medal streams, moderate climate, and wild fowl hunting. David Gonzales was the other inductee. His wife, Heidi, and son, Tyler, were in the wings watching. Dave came to Durango in 1992 with a gold and silver investment group. He has held an insurance license since 1989. When the chance came for him to work with First National Bank selling a full line of insurance, he jumped at the chance. His passions are Heidi and Tyler followed by fishing and bike riding.

The program today was meeting Curt Hamblin. This man is a champion frisbee tosser. He is renowned for his accuracy in the frisbee toss and he can do amazing things. One such is scoring a hole in one on a 285 foot throw. This throw had to remain under seventeen feet. The game he was playing was disc golf. One can play with metal baskets or use natural objects like trees or bushes. The game is similar to golf with discs that are drivers, approach discs and putters. The game can become a passion. Curt also has a passion for youth and he is expressing that with the creation of the Columbine Foundation. He feels that kids need a passion, whether it is piano, baseball or disc golf. He is trying to get disc golf to be a high school event. He is hosting 25 Pros and Amateurs to a golf tourney in his back yard to help fund his idea. Good luck and thanks, Curt.
