(04-12-2007 Meeting)

Opening

Ward led with the pledge and wished us all a Merry Christmas because of the new snow!

Jan Measles was provided with a joke for the day by Bob Salzer.  It had to do with why man lives to be 80 and dogs, monkeys 10 years and cows 20 years. The result is that the first 20 years man lives the good life, the next 40 he must toil, and the next 10 he does monkey tricks for the grand children and then spends 10 years sitting on the porch and barking at passers by!

Announcements

The April 26th meeting will be at the Recreation Center. Casino Night on Saturday the 14th, 6-10 PM, raffle at 10:00 PM April 14th.  Volunteers will receive training and work two hour shifts so you will have time to gamble as well. It’s a lot of fun so give Bill a call now.  The Fireside Chat of April 5th at the Strater was a success with about 25 folks attending.   The first scholarship meeting was held and the field was narrowed from 25 to 15 folks.  Interviews will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday. Angie Beach was looking for “A Few Good Men” to participate in the Men Who Grill competition on June 2d.  Angie wants to organize a team to compete with Kiwanis.  Ward announced the Board meeting 5:30 PM next Tuesday night at the Alpine Bank.  .

 Sgt. of Arms

Chandler Jackson fined some for being in the paper and got Moni, Tim Walsworth and Sara Olson. He also fined for missing Rotary pins. Dick Sullivan paid for the fresh snow. Niles Bruno coughed up $20 for the successful Fireside Chat. John Beekman paid a happy dollar for Tax Season being nearly over. Moni paid for having a fund raiser at her bank.  Wayne Bedor drew two unlucky cards and left money on the table.

Program

Giselle Pansze with the local group of citizens (which includes our own Phil Bryson) that is starting a Charter High School gave us many good reasons why smaller charter schools are more effective than mega-high schools. The group, not wanting to reinvent the wheel, decided to find a successful charter high school and then use that as a model for what can be done here in Durango.  The group found a successful high school in San Diego and will use that as a model for the proposed school.  Recognizing that the group has a long way to go before the tentative opening date of September 2008, it appears the 9R school district will have a little competition for students here on the west side of the County if the idea gets off the ground.  Stay tuned.

Closing

Bud  was in stellar form today amusing us with a downtrodden husband cleverly describing to his wife how her back seat driving was similar to the husbands annoying supervision of her while she is frying a couple of eggs.  Chuckles from some men and groans from some of the women including Bud’s wife Judy.

Respectfully Submitted, Wayne M. Bedor
