Cartwright announced that Monte Carlo night has 3 more sponsors. Chip
announced for Justin Osborn that we need a volunteer to take over the
Club Newsletter beginning in April 1st since Judy Heasley is leaving. Wayne Bedor
volunteered to take the notes for next Thursday only while Judy is out
of town. A permanent person is needed. Chip announced
for Jill Wark that a Fireside Chat has been
scheduled. Sherry Taber announced the 100th anniversary
of the laying of the cornerstone of the current library is being held on March
9th at 4 PM. Invitations/information at the
Registration table. Tami Codington passed around a sign-up
sheet for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters “Bow for kids Sake” fundraiser. Dick
Sullivan announced that there are 2 teams for this weekend’s Dave Spencer
Classic, and that they have lost one ski team member. Please see Dick
if you can be the substitute.
Sgt. at Arms
Chandler Jackson announced that all money collected today would go to the
Interact fundraiser. When Mark Dold was
charged for his Club anniversary he was also fined for not mentioning Rotary
during the safety PSA’s. Moni Helling was not at the meeting, but she was on the
radio and Chandler will get her next tie. Tim Walsworth was fined for the article that appeared on
the United Way in the Herald. Rick O’Block
paid his fine for being in the paper – enough said. Birthdays,
Norm Freemyer and Jay Hwang (neither
were there…Chandler will get you). Wedding
Anniversary, Jen Simon. Club Anniversaries:
John Beekmann, Bud Poe, Jeannie Wheeldon (she was there – 10 years), and Mark Dold (5 years). HAPPY DOLLARS: Chip
is happy his building passed the City inspection for re-occupancy (but today
his section of Main Ave is without power). Rick Routh
tossed in a buck happy for the positive outcome of an avalanche rescue. Tom
Brossia had 3 Happy Dollars – 1 for Adaptive
Sports raising $5100; 2 for being alive after skiing with Justin Osborn
and other young guys; and 3 oops, couldn’t remember! (Dick Sullivan stepped
in and said it was for pheasant hunting). Cathy Crum gave some
guilt dollars as she just got back and is leaving again on another trip
(Mexico). Mike Mathis happy that Rick O’Block did mention High Noon Rotary during his remarks
to the Durango 9-R School Board. Jan Measles is happy that
the snow finally stopped to get her sister down for a visit and that her son
got a raise and bought groceries! Steve Redding had loads to be
happy about and Bud Dearing was happy his new snow blower finally
arrived (better late than never). Chandler also fined for no pins
and anyone not attending the Interact fundraiser tonight. TICKET:
Winner, Jeanne Wheeldon. She drew a card
in the pick-a-card game, NO, but she did get a pizza fundraiser ticket. Chip
started giving Angie Beach a bad time about financial accounting
(hey, she’s a marketer), but she gave a ballpark figure that Interact has
raised $14k.
Program
Richard White, Professor Emeritus,
Smith College, member of the Green house Network, focus, Nation Sustainability
Alliance of SW Colorado, and Zero Emissions Research & Initiatives.
Title of program: “Global Warming: The Latest Briefing”
The speaker has a background in
astronomy and gave a PowerPoint presentation on the recent release on the
summary of climate changes (national). He used graphs/charts on CO2
emissions and temperature changes for the period 1850 to 2006. He stated
that the last 6 years have been 6 of the 7th warmest on
record. Scientists believe the earth is warming, but why? The 2007
current conclusions are: “Most of the observed temperature increases
since 1950 very likely due to increase in the greenhouse gas concentration
(10-1 odds). Impacts from continuing global warming include impacts on
human health, hurricanes, drought, sea level rises (could be devastating to
those in coastal cities), and decay of the Greenland ice cap. What about
SW Colorado and the Western US? Possible higher temperatures, especially
in the summer, possibly less precipitation, less snow pack, earlier runoff,
more droughts, and a diminished water supply. Policy discussions are
currently taking place on the national stage of what to do about things, right
now thinking is to implement energy efficiency measures. The speaker
asked: “How much are we willing to pay for climate change? Our
grandchildren’s World. The presentation was followed with a Q&A with
counter opinions.
Closing
Bud gave a short story on a marriage contest and alligators
and Chip then rang the bell to release us.
Respectfully Submitted, Judy Heasley
