Program

Reserve Officer Jim Wotkyns introduced newly minted Durango Police Captain Micki Browning who comes to the community wit an impressive resume’ including 14 years on the Santa Barbara, California police force and a degree in Medieval History. The Captain kicked off her remarks with a synopsis of the recent incident involving a mentally disturbed man which was on the front page of the Herald this week.  The event ended successfully with the law enforcement folks implementing their “communications, maintenance and containment strategy very effectively.  The man ended up being sent to the SW Colorado Mental Health Center.  Captain Browning cited the excellent “critical incident” training that all Durango PD officers have received which contributed to the successful conclusion of this incident.  Captain Browning also publicized the 10 week citizen’s police academy as an opportunity for citizens to learn more about the police department and help build bridges between the PD and the community.  The Captain then opened the floor to questions and there were many.  Question: Do we have big city gangs yet? Answer: No, but there are budding signs of them more so in Farmington, NM. Q: Are there problems getting officers? A: To some extent partly because of compensation and the fact that the profession is more transient than in the past. Q: How did Captain Browning get into the law enforcement field and current position? A: Didn’t want a desk job and paid her dues by being competent and working her way up through the ranks. She then led us all in a round of applause for Reserve Officer Jim Wotkyns for his steadfast service to the Durango PD.

Closing

Charlie Albert and Peter Marshall informed us that when we receive the plastic key cards when staying at hotels and motels, the only information embedded in the cards are the room numbers and the check-in and check-out dates.  Apparently the Pasadena, CA chief of police has been mis-informing the public that the cards contain names, addresses, credit card numbers, telephone numbers, etc.  Not so according to our in house experts.

Respectfully Submitted, Wayne M. Bedor
