Announcements

Bob Chaput
went over Red Ball ticket sale directions.  Money is to be turned into Mark Prouty.  A person can have multiple “adoptions” on one ticket number (the computer will provide the multiple ball combinations). Bob went into great detail so Red Badgers would understand.  Everyone is encouraged to volunteer and sign-up sheets will be available at next week’s meetings.  Tom Brossia especially said “tall people” were needed for tent set-up at 8 AM on Red Ball day.

Angie Beach announced that Interact will be selling Red Ball tickets at tables at City Market 3 times.  Also, there will be a chili cook-off at the Red Ball event.  Details to follow.  An Interact committee meeting was to be held after today’s meeting.

Peter Marshall announced a short Scholarship Committee meeting after today’s meeting. Sherry Taber announced that Rotarian Ronald Fogleman will be presenting “Perspectives on National Defense” Monday, January 8th, 7 PM, Room 130, Noble Hall, Fort Lewis CollegeWayne Bedor said “exciting auditors and accountants,” from Russia (plus 2 translators) as a Rotary Russian Accountant Delegation would be here may 19-26 and needed hosts (accommodations).  Sign up sheets were passed around.

Sgt. of Arms

Chandler Jackson fined everyone not wearing a pin AND a badge.  Member birthdays included Mark Dold and Howard Wilson (who tossed in $100!), and Justin Osborn’s 2nd year club anniversary.  Dick Pearson acknowledged his anniversary with a $100 for the scholarship fund as did Bill CartwrightNiles Bruno confessed he had been in the paper numerous times and tossed in $20 to cover his publicity “debt.”  Chandler fined Lauryn Kasten for the numerous times she had been in the paper, as well as Mark DoldMike Matheson was fined for a December 31 news article regarding land protection, and Steve Wheeldon chimed in about the acres of land that have been saved, plus some other comments.  Dick Pearson tossed in happy hallelujahs because City Market South finally got truckloads of food (yes, they have potatoes, bananas and eggs!).  Justin was happy due to a successful New Year’s Eve party (and commented that Niles Bruno can cut a rug).  Sherry Taber gave a happy dollar that Bob Salzer is back after successful knee surgery.  A dollar was tossed in that John Anderson wasn’t hurt after being “slam dunked” by a snowboarder while on the mountain.  Charlie Albert was happy a roof didn’t collapse from snow.  John Watkins was really happy to go to Arizona for the National College Football Championship game (Ohio and Florida) this weekend.  Howard Poe was happy he got to go to the Rose Bowl (but not thrilled that Michigan lost to USC).  But, Chandler tossed in a dollar because USC “whooped” Michigan.  And, Moni Bjorlin tossed in a buck because she made it through her divorce without lawyers…and announced she is going back to her former name:  Moni Helling.  Kathy Firestone had the winning ticket, BUT the basketball hoop is broken so she was given the money – which she donated back to the Club.
Program

Emily Spencer introduced the program:  “Fly Fishing in the Durango area & Fly Fishing Team USA, The Caddis Company, Josh Stephens & Brian Caspay.  The speakers said we live in a prime area for the best fishing.  The Animas River has a gold medal designation (Hwy 160 south to the Home Depot Bridge) because the number of fish.  The San Juan River in NM is one of the tops in the US.  It boasts 80,000 trout for 4 miles below the dam (15”-17” fish).  And, Hermosa Creek has an outstanding water designation because of the various fish species.  Fishing is a major income producer for Colorado (a high non-resident visitor percentage.  In 2001 $645 million was brought into the state with the average angler spending $700 on food, fuel and lodging).  The speakers said that 1 out of 5 people fish, 70% are married and 1/3 are women.  The speakers are 2 of 5 anglers from Colorado and 2 of 15 Fly Fishing Team USA members nationally – they have been chosen to compete in the 2007 World Championships in May.  Good luck Josh & Brian!

 Closing

Ward said that Bud was not with us “so we were off the hook” for a tall tale!  Ward then rang the bell to dismiss us.
