 Announcements

Tim Walsworth reminded everyone of the upcoming Golf Tournament on Friday, July 21st at Hillcrest.  Letters have gone out to the sponsors.  He is asking for team signups to start and to think about bringing in some door prizes and silent auction items.

Pam Moore had a six pound 8 ounce baby boy. Mother and son, Wade IV, are doing great.

Burt Coleman asked that anyone interested in having a small % of their City Market value card savings go to the Wolf Refuge to sign a sheet that he passed around.

Ward Holmes, president pro elect, announced that he had his first Board meeting 5/23 and announced the club’s directors for 2006/2007. Steve Govreau, past president; Chip Lile, president elect; Nancy Vanderwal, executive secretary; Tammy Coddington and Steve Govreau, treasurer; Chandler Jackson, sergeant-at-arms; community services, Bill Cartwright; club service, Justin Osborn; vocational service , Mark Prouty; international service, Charlie Albert; youth service, Angie Beach; members-at-large, Sherry Taber, Ted Robson, Niles Bruno, Steve Redding, Rick O’Block; membership, Jill Wark.

Bob Chaput announced that he would be taking pictures at the next meeting if new members need a picture for the directory and current members need an update.  If you have a favorite picture of yourself, bring it in and Bob will scan it. Send update information for the directory to John Beekman.

Dave Ganevsky asked for a volunteer to put out the newsletter for the month of June.  The traditional HNR volunteer spirit did not seem to be alive and well at the meeting as no Rotarians raised there hands…even when English majors were asked.  Steve Govreau suggested a Red Badger do it and Mark Suggested drawing a ticket for the privilege.

Sgt. of Arms

Mark Prouty outdid himself again.  He fined non-pin wearers, no females at tables and one table that had five females.  Happy $$$.  Bob Salzer is happy with the new KIUP format and Bud Deering and Ted Robson say it sucks.  Justin Osborne was thankful that Ward Holmes advanced him enough for an adult beverage at the Taste of Durango.  Steve Wheeldon is happy. Steve Govreau is happy that the kids are out of school.  When the ticket was drawn, Steve Wheeldon was honored for having been struck down by a maggot wagon in LA and lost two years of his life to recovery.

Program

Tim Zink, the head of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe’s (Tribe) Growth Fund, gave a synopsis of what the Tribe has been doing the past three years as it relates to their energy related businesses, Red Cedar and Red Willow.  He also explained how the Tribe intends to see to it that some of these entities will operate into perpetuity notwithstanding that the natural resources may be dissipated over time.  The Growth Fund is the umbrella for all the Tribe’s business enterprises, and there are many.  Gaming, real estate, energy development, and gravel operations to mention a few.  Tim also explained how the Tribe purchased the 980 acre Artesian Valley property southeast of Durango and its donation of 60 acres to Mercy Medical Center and dedicated the rest to the Three Springs development.  Tim introduced his colleague Keith Walzak, development and design director for the Three Springs development.  Keith then went on and with a great power point presentation described Three Springs in great detail, using every land use buzz word minted in the last 10 years.  This development is expected to be built out over the next 20 years and will change the face of La Plata County and the City of Durango forever.  It is a very ambitious project and will have over 2,000 housing units and 1,000,000 sf of commercial space.  Tim Zink closed with an invite to the HNR to come visit the project some day for lunch.

Closing

Bud Deering gave club members an idea on how to receive prompt police service if it is ever needed.

Steve rang the bell to release us.
