New Member Induction
Val Phelps was inducted today and was sponsored by Angie Beach. Val is a serious biker who experienced a
terrible accident about 3 years ago that knocked him out for three days. The accident changed his life and he now
places higher priority on things like community service through Rotary
membership and less importance on the aspect of networking through his Rotary
membership. He is looking forward to
getting involved in Rotary’s community service projects.
Announcements
The meeting on May
11, 2006 will be held at the Durango
Rec. Center,
and not the DoubleTree.
Marcella, our exchange student ,
gave a report on her recent activities.
As the time for her return home approaches, she recognizes that her
departure will be bittersweet.
Sherry Tabor announced there will be a number of public
meetings for input for the new library starting with one at 6:30 on Thursday, 5-4-06 in the 4th floor conference room of Mercy
Medical Center.
Wayne Bedor reminded the club of the upcoming annual Durango
Nature Studies Weed and Beer festival that starts at 9:00 AM this Saturday,
May 6, 2006 at the DNS 140 acre Bondad
Nature Park.
High Noon Rotary has been supporting
this park for the last eight years by paying for a bridge across the Florida
and doing different, annual cleanup, landscaping and trail building
projects. The park serves about 2,400 La
Plata County
children annually. This time we will be
cutting musk thistles down using pointed, long handled shovels.
Rotarians wishing to be environmentally friendly are invited
to carpool by meeting under the Doubletree sign at 8:30 AM Saturday morning.
Please bring a long handled pointed shovel, sturdy shoes, a water
bottle, sunscreen/hat, and work gloves. The work starts at 9:00 AM and finishes at 1:00
PM to be followed by some Stonehouse Subs and Ska beer or soft
drink refreshments. Please call Wayne
at 259-4759 by noon Friday, 5-5-06 if you plan on being there so
DNS can have the right quantity of food and beverages. This is a great family activity and if you
want to invite Rotaract or Interact members to join us, please do so.
Sgt. of Arms
Mark Prouty fined Steve Redding for a 40 year wedding
anniversary and Bud Deering for 15 years of wedded bliss. Cathy Crum paid up for 18 years of High Noon
Rotary membership.
Program
The program was presented by Mary
Barter, Diane Doney, Brian Kimmel and Warren Christopher. They walked us through the Buckley Park
Rehabilitation Project Version II.
Version I from about five years ago was not met with a lot of
enthusiasm; however, Version II appeals to the majority of the membership as
well as 9R and will cost about $387K.
The membership voted to contribute the $25K the Club has had in its
capital reserve toward the children’s play area at the southeast end of the
park. Mary Barter and Diane Doney thanked the club for bringing to 9R’s
attention that this valuable community resource needed some enhancements and
the proposed design should fit the bill.
Closing
Bud had some “Bubba” jokes that helped to close the meeting.
Next Program
Club Meeting (May 11, 2006) at the Community
Recreation Center
at the north end of the Fairgrounds.
