Person of the Week:

Dr. Mary Barter wove a wonderful story around her father and her early life.  He tried to instill in her the notion of “Prepare yourself to be self-sufficient” and “Achieve on your own”.  Dr. Barter illustrated how she deviated from his wisdom and the lessons learned on her life-long journey.  She managed to finish her college (Carleton in MN) and first job in Alaska years – before timing out!

Program:

Members celebrated the 50th anniversary of National Police Week (5/15/04) with a very informative program by our own Major Ralph Martin of the CSP.  He started as a Trooper 34 years ago and is now a District manager responsible for 17 counties.  Their primary mission is to prevent and respond to traffic accidents.  While traffic volume on state and federal highways in Colorado increased by an average of 1.3 percent, the number of fatal and injury crashes dropped 8.2 percent last year.  Moreover, the number of persons killed on CSP-patrolled roads fell by a remarkable 17 percent – representing 91 lives saved, or an average of one person every four days.  One reason for this success is by deploying limited resources in high-visibility enforcement efforts on targeted road segments.  Around here, this means U.S. 160 between Durango and Bayfield, and U.S. 550 south to the border.  Ralph also spoke of the other activities involving the CSP – it was in fact a very interesting program.  Thanks Ralph!
