R O T A R Y G R A M
September 18, 2003
We had a First for Rotary today!! A noon luncheon with no food, just coffee and water!! Our incoming President Mike M. skillfully executed this remarkable achievement. The famished Rotarians were too emaciated to revolt, so the meeting continued.
Howard Wilson provided a warm invocation and led us in the Pledge.
We welcomed but did not feed three guests, Rotarians all: Bob Conrad from the morning club, Bill Nobles from Pagosa Springs, and Richard Bartlett, an RV-er from Redlands Ca.
Tim Walsworth from United Way revealed that our golf tournament raised almost $16,000! Wow!! He especially thanked Melisa Caskey and Jeff Brown, plus the dozens of our own members for their efforts.
Charlie Albert announced almost 115 wheelchairs had been received for the Mexico project.
The GSE exchange reception has been moved and will now be held at the Bodo Fire Station behind Pat Murphy. Contact Pam Taylor
Jeannie Wheeldon, the Director of Old Time Radio Show “Alkali Basin”, brought her performers to entertain the starving crowd. It is indeed quite delightful, and it runs at the Diamond Circle through Sept. 27th. The ensemble will also present a song, dancing and comedy based on Cole Porter Revue. Our empty stomachs enjoyed three songs from this show, including the amazing “Anything Goes.”
Bob Conrad from the American Cancer Society and our own Steve Redding, both prostate cancer survivors, provided the hungry club with essential news on this disease. Almost 200,000 men are diagnosed annually and more than 30,000 will die…a cancer rate more serious than breast cancer. Here in La Plata County, a man is diagnosed every fortnight. Guys, get your PSA blood tests!!
We all hope today’s First will also be the Last no-food lunch. Should Chessa return next week, the menu will include Fried Chicken. Mike will be limited to coffee and water.
Yours in Rotary,
Spencer
