Quote: How far that little candle throws its
beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world. William Shakespeare
Under the warm
leadership of Chessa, Tom B. offered a touching Invocation and another fine
Rotary meeting would be enjoyed by all.
Guests:
Past member Margaret
Gray and hubby Leonard returned from Brownwood TX while visiting Rotarians Tom
Elliott (Vernon TX) and Ken Walker (Ardmore OK) joined us. Proposed member Tom Cheatham was in
attendance and you should have received his bio from Jill. Durango Rotarian J. I. Coyne did a make-up
while Rick Routh invited Mike Jones, a planner for SUT to lunch. Other guests included Bob Geffe (Scott M.),
Aryie Beach (Ron H.) and Erin Youngblood (Tim W.)
Announcements
and Happenings:
Chessa announced
your Board of Directors met last Tuesday, and invited all to attend the next
BOD meeting Aug 19, 7:00 am Doubletree.
As always, 3rd Tuesday every
month.
The Rotary District
Convention is scheduled for 9/26-28 at that great scenic party-town La Junta
CO. With three clubs in our fine city,
there are plans to hire a Rotary Party Bus to undergo the trek make plans to join the adventure.
Mike Swilling of
Kiwanis announced the successful venture to return service club plaques at
Santa Rita Park. However, the real
reason for his visit was to promote their Duck Race lottery only 1,000 ducks to be sold at $10 each for
First Prize of $1,000. He did succeed
in finding many duckling sponsors in our fine Club.
The Red Ball Express,
such a wonderful success in its First Rolling earlier this year, is on a roll
for next year. A planning meeting is
scheduled Monday July 21st at Wells Fargo
5:30 pm all invited.
Pamela C. Moore
invited all to help with the Hwy 160 Trash-Pickup event scheduled Saturday
7/19. Meet at Barbara and Miguel’s
Kennebec Café for a great breakfast at 8:00 am. Pickup begins an hour later
and yes, a special prize has been placed in the trash for a lucky
“trash-picker-upper”. Join in the fun!
Mike McG enjoyed
breakfast with the Rotary DayBreak 6:45 am Club and former Officer Friendly mandated our club support their
“Bikes to Mexico” program donate
useable bicycles to get Mexico rolling again.
The Golf
Tournament. The Biggie. Melissa Caskey and Tim Walsworth have been
working very diligently to promote our most excellent fundraiser. This year it is Saturday August 9th at Dalton Ranch. They have recruited six $1,000 Full Hole Sponsors and 22
Half-Hole (what’s that?) Sponsors. And
19 of 30 available teams have been filled.
These two wonderful Rotarians have carried the golf-ball so far but have
finally secured the help of Rotary caddies to help with the project: Jeannie Wheeldon, Duffy McKay, Jeff Brown,
Peter Marshall, Walter Parks, Tom Brossia and Frank Valen. As always, we need you to step up to the
plate…or tee.
(As you read this on
your pink curtainless computer screen
you had to be there stand up and
cheer on these fine Rotarians)
Our new card-deck
target is the Queen of Hearts and she
remains MIA.
New
Red-Badge High Noon Rotarians:
We enjoyed the
privilege of initiating two additional members of our community into NH
Rotary.
Bill Cartwright is
the Regional Marketing Manager for Somerset Capital Group, Ltd., formerly of Frederick, Maryland 21701. Sponsored by Laurie Forbes who found his
family a home at the Ranch, he is a longtime Rotarian and a Paul Harris
Fellow. We are delighted he has found
a new home with us.
Dan Morgenstern is
our newest member. I am guessing he is
in the category of early retirement-professional philanthropist-music man. Sponsored by neighbor Emil Nagy, Dan sold
his electrical manufacturing plant in Chicago after plotting a five-year
migration plan to join our wonderful community. Beyond biz-wiz, he is a professional musician flute, classical chamber music, Israeli
Symphony and now San Juan Symphony. He
is already active in our local Habitat for Humanity and our Affordable Housing
Task Force. I think Dan is our kind of
guy, and we were delighted his wife Polly enjoyed his initiation into our HNRC.
Meet
the Member:
Dr. Burton E.
Coleman was given five minutes to share his life’s history. A native of Oakland CA, Burt served in WWII
and emerged with a passion for flying and the GI Bill. The latter was his passport to dental school
and his orthodontics degree. After
teaching 10 years at San Jose State, he spent four decades in private
practice. He teamed with a plastic surgeon
and together they specialized in treating cleft palates, especially for newborns. He and Audrey have been involved in our
community for almost 10 years. Besides
HNRC, Burt is active in Adaptive Sports and is involved in providing dental
treatment facilities on the Zuni Reservation.
Program:
From the heat of the
Missionary Ridge fire last summer emerged the Disaster Recovery Coalition,
co-chaired by our own Rotarian John Anderson.
The Coalition consists of up to two-dozen organizations involved in
recovery efforts and has been strongly supported by Rotary and Kiwanis.
One faith-based
member of the Coalition is the Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) program. Kevin Walton provided an overview of the LDR
disaster response efforts with help from Frank Garbie. With financial support from two national
Lutheran organizations, the local group provides grants to people in need
following disasters. He said they are
time-neutral in that the entire “Response” period spanning rescue, relief, and
recovery can last up to five years. A
major aspect of their effort is counseling victims of disasters.
Another terrific
meeting , enjoyed by all!
Next
Week July 24:

Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Yours in Rotary,
Spencer Pearse
