Program

Mike gave the podium to John Anderson to introduce the program, Music In the Mountains.  It is the 17th season, headed by Jim Foster, President and founded Maestro Misha Semanitzky.

Jim told us about the history of the series, starting with 28 musicians and 8 concerts.  This season, there are 300 musicians involved and 22 concerts, with 3 in Pagosa, the largest season yet.  There is broad-based support of Music in the Mountains, with ticket sales accounting for 30% of expenses, with the balance from individuals and businesses, including 22 concert sponsors.

There are more than 100 advertisers in this year's program and more than 1/4th of the attendees are tourists, adding an estimated $2mm to the local economy.  Jim indicated that there are 14 musical festivals each summer and the Colorado Music Alliance has been created to coordinate various activities.

Starting 4 years ago, the series created Music in the Mountains Goes to School, Misha indicated.  He indicated that Mike Elliot had asked him about a kids program and now more than 200 4th and 5th graders are studying music.  MITM works with the kid's ensembles, conducts demonstrations and gets the FLC faculty involved.

There is now a 2 week conservancy program, with local and out of state kids participating.  Misha thanked the community for it's support and started the musical part of the program.

First was clarinetist Bailey Kunkle accompanied by Rosemary Klass.  They played a classical piece.  In addition to her musical prowess, Bailey was first academically in the freshman class at DHS.

Next to perform was Alden Derck on the piano.  He played a classical piece, followed by some jazz.

After the musical presentations, John Anderson, with the help of Mike Sandberg, auctioned off cd's and event tickets, with proceeds going to support the kids programs.

With nothing more for the good of Rotary, President Elect Mike McGuire, closed the meeting.
