Jeff opened the meeting, a club assembly,
by reminding everyone of the 7th annual Nigh Noon Rotary/United Way golf
tourney and that it accounts for 1/2 the money raised by the club each year.
Wynn led a prayer and followed with the pledge. Guests were introduced, including:

Announcements:
Habitat for
Humanity Volunteers: Jose Rivero
of HFH announced their latest project (Forest Lakes) and made a call for
volunteers. He also encouraged
businesses to
become corporate sponsors by allowing employees time off with pay to
participate in HFH
projects.
The Hundred Club
of Durango: Bill Mashaw, Kiwanian
and involved citizen announced that The
Hundred Club of Durango is soliciting new members for this worthy
endeavor. The club is dedicated to supporting
families of Police, Fire and related public safety workers that meet tragedy in the line of duty. Membership is $100 per individual per

Caring Committee: A sympathy card for Dick Pearson was circulated and signed. Dick lost his brother recently.
Perfect Attendance: 11 members were recognized for their
attendance the previous year,
including: Tom Brossia, Jeff
Brown, Jill Bruce, Paulette Church, Chessa Gill, Steve Govreau, Mike Matheson, John Marshall, Steve
Redding, Jeannie Wheeldon, Steve Wheeldon.
Scholarships: Steve Redding announced that 8 scholarships
totaling $9k were awarded.
SERGEANT AT ARMS: Jim Wotkyns is serving as the SAA for the
month, with the task of recognizing
and honoring members. Among those
honored were; Laurie
Forbes, elected to the
Board of the Durango Area Board of Realtors. Len Goebel for a missing license
plate on the front of his
vehicle. Terry
Lee, for a last name change. Melisa Caskey, her husband is opening a restaurant on Main. Tom and Linda
Brossia are celebrating their 39th.
The Melodrama's last week is this week, followed by
another production that will run through September 21st.
The weekly card drawing did not
produce a winner, so the pot rolls over again.
Jeff lead into the induction of 3 new members, by commenting that August
is membership month. Those inducted were: Mark Larson,
introduced by his Co-sponsor, Ellen Roberts.
She indicated that Mark lives
by the 4 way test and will fit our special brand of fellowship. Mark said that he likes the high energy of the club, wants
to work with kids and is happy to become a member. Check his website, www.larsoncolorado.com .
Jan Measles
was introduced by her sponsor, Steve Osborne.
She and her family have been
area residents for 18 years. She
feels strongly about working with youth and serves on the Family Selection Committed of HFH. Part of her interest in Rotary is to be more
hands on. She thanked those members in her category for
welcoming her to the club.
Peter
Marshall, GM of the Double Tree and former Rotarian was sponsored by
Karen L'Argent. He aims to be involved with youth and had
been part of the Boys and Girls Club in
SFO, his most recent post before coming to Durango. He has been with Double Tree for 15 years and admits struggling with
the language while working in Tennessee.

Completing the requirements for new
members, Jim Whitley, Bart Cross and Mike Sandberg received their blue badges.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: This week's meeting was devoted to Community
Service. Tom B. spoke about
projects, including those that beautify the community, benefit our youth and
promote fellowship.
Tom indicated that the Capital
Projects Committee is co-chaired by Dean Brookie and Brian Kimmel. He thanked the current and past members of the committee. He indicated that public comment on the proposal to renovate Buckley
Park has resulted in more than 50 ideas.
This project will
cost around $250k and that the club will be going to the community for most of
the money.
Tom thanked Melisa, Walter, and Missy
for their work on the golf tournament, Mark P. for his efforts on the Mexican Fiesta and
Paulette and Chip for the Octoberfest.
He indicated that Petra will
be back from her LOA to head up this year's holiday party.
He said we will be hearing from Past
President, Steve Wheeldon, regarding a club foundation. Stay tuned.
John Anderson will chair HNR's disaster recovery
efforts and well as co- chair
the community effort.
The club will continue to support a
mentoring program, highway cleanup and the immunization grant.
The next meeting is devoted to fire
related issues, with the Amphitheatre dedication, including box lunches from
City Market South, on August 29th.
With nothing more for the good of Rotary,
Jeff rang the meeting to a close.
