Durango High Noon Rotary Club
November 8, 2001
Steve,
yes he was here (apologies for
the last bulletin indicating that he was to be gone), opened the meeting by
asking Carl to offer a prayer and then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Steve asked if anyone had news about the war
from a relative or friend that was serving.
Russell
Parker indicated that his store was posting pictures of veterans and would copy
them for free. Bring them to the photo studio.
Russell is the Manager of the Wal-Mart store.
Steve
then recognized the newer members that have joined the club since July of this
year.
Two members of Kiwanis asked for
help with the annual Salvation Army Bell Ringing throughout the holidays and
circulated sign up sheets. Glancing at
the sheets, it was clear that HNR is doing its share for the cause as well as
supporting like-minded service organizations.
Guests were introduced and they
included:
o Jiri Klubal
o Jim Duresky (we need to invite
Jim back so he can tell you about his encounter with my cat!)
o Bob Salzer
o Jim Whitley
o Darrell DeFratuz
o Ed Simmons
o Grant Siemens
o Caroline Charles
o Sara Love
o Ryan Romero
o Jose Garcia
o Alfie Umbaugh
o Chuck Owens
Susan
Sanders circulated a card for Pete Hammond who is battling back from surgery
for an aortic aneurysm and heart valve replacement. Nancy let us know if you need assistance of any kind.
Early
results, subject to the receipt of the balance of the ticket money, put the net
for the Octoberfest at about $3,500.00.
Nice job Paulette and Chessa and all the club members that invested
their time. Please bring the balance of
the ticket money next Thursday! According to Steve, about 1/3rd of
us need to pony up. I m one of them!
The
Christmas party will be December 9th. Petra is coordinating the silent auction and is asking for items
with an International Flavor . She
reminded us that the proceeds from the Christmas party make is possible for the
club to continue to provide a healthy breakfast for 200 pre-schoolers outside
Mexico City, 360 days a year!! Petra said that often, is the best, if not the
only real meal they get.
Tami
and Russ presented certificates of achievement and cash awards to students from
Chuck Owens elective class on business at DHS.
The awards were for business plans created by students or pairs of
students and included plans for a gas station and convenience store, a disabled
skier s camp, a car audio store and a kayak shuttle business.
Tom
Galbraith, Steve Osborne, Tami Coddington, John Marshall and John Stolfa (Bank of the San Juans) evaluated the
business plans presented by Chuck s class on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of
last week. All of the kids, some as
young as 14, were able to create a business plan, use Power Point and narrate
their presentations. Some were better
than others, but they were all introduced to the process of creating a new
business.
Good job to the Vocational Service Committee,
with a special salute to Tami for making it happen. Thanks to Bob Chaput for the picture and for teaching me how to
put it in the bulletin.
Pam
and Carl took over by recognizing birthdays, special events (such as Steve and Lisa Govreau s next
child), secrets of life and the big question .
Jeannie knew which side the Liberty Bell cracked when rung for the first
time and Laurie Forbes secret of life is to know yourself and to deal with it . Good medicine!
Steve
introduced club member George Litow, who in turn introduced the Old Pickups ,
to entertain us with some superb Barber Shop Quartet Singing. They opened with the Star Spangled Banner
and followed with a number of favorites and tunes adapted to Barber Shop style
and harmonies.
George
told us that the group could be bought, being available to serenade individuals
and groups at special events. They will
be performing on December 2nd with the Durango Chorale Society and
on December 18th at the Durango Mall. If you cannot make the first event, at least go to the Mall, get
some hot chocolate and sing along. Is
that OK George?
The
Old Pickups were presented with HNR presenter s mugs and the thanks of the
club.
Next
week Jeff will preside over the meeting and it will be focused on Vocational
Service, including the scholarship program.
There
will be no meeting on Thanksgiving, November 22 and the Board Meeting will be
held on Wednesday, November 28th.
The Fun Committee will meet Tuesday,
November 13th @ 5:00 PM in the palatial offices of Brown Wheeldon
Associates.
Tom and Carl both had comments when
the call went out, Is there anything else for the good of Rotary . Once the comments were heard, along with a
few groans, the meeting was closed with the sound of the Rotary bell.
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Cub.
