 Durango High Noon Rotary Club

Minutes of our meeting, September 6, 2001

Steve opened the meeting by introducing the "Men in Plaid" who sang a stirring version of the National Anthem and he then led us in the pledge. Guests were introduced and those that signed-in included:

Clifton Callicotte

Jim Whitly

Deanna Devereaux

Earl and Jentra Barker

Ken Fusco

Jim Reser

Pat Murphy

Tammy McGuire

Steve showed us a Judith Reynolds political Cartoon that contained an indirect reference to High Noon Rotary.  It pays to ask.

Registration for the District Convention at the Peaks in Telluride continues until September 22nd.  Come on up and enjoy the fellowship and make some new friends.

For Missy and Ward, Steve announced the upcoming United Way radio auction to be aired by all the Four Corners Broadcasting stations in the market from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM tomorrow, Friday, September 7th.  Keep those radios tuned to your favorite flavor of FCB and your telephones and credit cards handy.  Buy some stuff!

Steve W. announced breakfast on September 29th at Steve R.'s place, followed by trash pick-up.  Sign up at next week's meeting!

Paulette directed us to the sign up sheet for duties at the Octoberfest, on October(of course) 25th.   It will be dinner only, from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM.  There is a limit of 1,000 guests, so it will be an exclusive event, including dancing (or listening) to a local Oompah band.

Burt Coleman reported on the latest 'Locks for Life' give away.  2,000 locks were given away last Saturday at Wal-Mart.  The balance of our current supply will be given out by the San Juan Mountain Association.  Thank-yous included Missy, Jenny, Tami, Sherry and Doug.

Tami announced the High School incubator program and asked for speakers and other volunteers.  This writer participated in a similar program some years ago and the kids really paid attention to the 'real life' issues.  Quite a change from 'why do we have to learn this?'

Having fulfilled their new member responsibilities, Jill presented blue badges to Leonard Gray and Ted Robson.

An appeal for more volunteers for the fund raising committee, with red badgers receiving special attention from Steve.

Sadly, Steve announced that Margaret Gray has accepted a position in Texas and will be going back in to private practice.  We'll miss her in the club and the community.  And, Leonard will be leaving us as well.  We were blessed to have them here for even a short time.

Carl Clark asked those with September birthdays to make a 'donation' to the pot and held a drawing for a Rotary International pen.

Producing a swimming suit, obviously not his, Carl asked the owner if she would like to claim them, with a $5.00 fine if she explained how, as Carl said, 'she got separated from them' or $10.00 if she takes the answer to the grave.  Tami paid the $10 bucks!

Bud D. (09/08) asked to present his secret of life and it was a two-part answer.  Younger women and to play the cards you are dealt.  Bud presented the club with his check of $1,000.00 for a Votec scholarship and it's not the first time!

Steve took back the floor, telling us that, as club President, he had two things the wanted to get done in his year as our leader.  One is to see that the park project actually gets built and to have some fun.

We'll hear from Mike M. et al next week on the park and the fun just keeps on happening.  In the fun department, Steve introduced Jeannie, who had her 'Men in Plaid' give us a teaser of the production at the Melodrama that will be attended by fun-loving Rotarians and their guests tomorrow evening.

Don't forget, $10.00 of the $20.00 ticket comes back to the club.  And, hey, 80 of us signed up indicating that we would attend and Jeannie had 'dough' from only 18 of us as of today's meeting.    The other 62 of you know who you are!  Box office opens at 7:30 PM, curtain at 7:45 PM.  Fun Happens, see you there!!

The Plaid Four sang a medley of Caribbean tunes, while wearing sombreros.  If they're still wearing plaid in the new millennium, it sort of explains the choice of hats.

Jill and Margaret each stared in a song, with Margaret dancing in the chorus line, knee and all.  Good sports!!  Margaret was made and Honorary Plaid, with all the rights and privileges of that high office.

Our special guest next week is Julia Hubbel, who will enlighten us with organization building concepts.

Bud Deering offered the final thought for the day and Steve gaveled the meeting to a close, with a 'see you tomorrow night'.  You all know what that means.
