Durango High Noon Rotary Club

Minutes of our meeting, August 9, 2001

Steve Wheeldon opened the meeting with a moment of reflection and led us in the pledge. Guests were introduced and, from the sign-in sheet they included:

James Burpee

Frank Valen

Clifton Coll...? (handwriting illegible)

Dr. Linda Mack

John Kelly

Tammy Stone

Eric Stone

Michael Scanlon

Terry Aspen

Senator Jim Dyer

Devon Seibel (announced, but not signed-in)

Paulette was given the floor and she had John Kelly of Williams Field Service explain their Ride the Line United Way fund raiser. Fines for the day were donated to the UW.

Paulette switched gears to let the club know that an exchange student from Thailand is here, a young lady, and that she needs on more host home. Her nickname is 'Puifai' and she is now on vacation with her current host family. Get in touch with Paulette if you have some ideas or leads!

Melisa (Melisa, my spell check wants another 's', ?) updated us on the golf tournament, asking us to solicit more door prizes and to let her know by next Tuesday at Pride Insurance. There are still two 1/2 hole sponsorships available.

Steve urged us to attend the La Plata County Fair this weekend and reminded us again that our District Convention is October 5 - 7 at the Peaks in Telluride. Deadline for killer room rates ($105.00/night) is next week Wednesday and registration continues through most of September. Get in touch with Virginia Cavanaugh Miller of the evening club.

The newest Rotary dependent is a baby girl, born to Tina and John Beekmann.

Jeannie W. had additional sign up sheets on the tables for the September 7, 2001 'Forever Plaid' 50's musical comedy at the Diamond Circle Theatre. $10.00 of each $20.00 ticket will be given to the club by Diamond Circle. 100 Rotarians and guests having fun will give us $1,000.00 additional for projects. Don't wait for guests and relatives to come to town, get out and enjoy the attractions that thousands come here to experience.

Good things come in threes, Paulette took the floor again to give us info on the October 25th Octoberfest fund raiser at the Fair Grounds. It will be an evening only affair, with a beer garden, Ompah Band, Bratwurst, Knockwurst, Sauerkraut, potatoes, etc. Tix will be available soon, kids $4.00 in advance, $5.00 at the door, Adults $7.00 and $8.00. Paulette will give Polka lessons. Stay tuned for more info. This will be a great time!!

The Club's Bicycle-Powered Rotary Wheel is in great demand for appearances. Bob V. has arranged to have the trailer pulled by horses in the Cowboy poetry parade and our District Governor has asked that is be present at the District Conference.

The evening club has asked our help to find a family for an exchange student from Japan that needs a one level house. See Paulette or Suzy Loether from evening club.

Karen L'Argent was Pam's first Secret of Life victim and the club was not very kind to Pam. $5.00? Happy Bucks or as the evening club calls them, 'Brags', began with Arvella telling us about her Grandson at the U.S. Air Force Academy in CO Springs. Chessa, also related to the cadet, couldn't be prouder of her son, who had already distinguished himself and done those back in DRO proud!

Cathy Crum was in Boston for the marriage of her niece and Steve G. reported that Miller School had received a grant of $600k for a science lab.

Our immediate past President, Tom G. will be putting his Captain's license to use for 8 weeks and we will him well. "There are steel ships and wooden ships that sail across the see, but the best ships are friendships, may they ever be.!"

Paulette commemorated the 15th Anniversary of the Adult Education Society, boy is he busy. Ted R. proclaimed that he was happy not to be Vern Swanson, as Vern was hosting 60-some people at his home prior to his son's wedding.

Rick O'Block reported on accidental facial hair removal, Steve R. settled a law suit and Len Goebel parked in a red zone.

Pam couldn't stump Patty B. with the brain teaser, when did the first product Corvette roll off the assembly line. It was 1953 and 300 were made.

Chessa introduced our speakers, Tami and Eric Stone of Timber Tech West. They educated us on Wildfire prevention planning, Residential Wildfire Defensible Space Creation, Tree thinning, Brush removal and Timber slash disposal. Natural wildfires, part of nature's management plan, have been suppressed for years and our area needs attention. Moneys are available and more seem to be on the way, from both the Federal and State governments.

Steve thanked the speakers and presented them with the Rotary mug in appreciation. Jeff Brown will chair next week's meeting, which will be a joint get together, after each club eats their respective lunches. Rumor has it that our is better.

Jill B. reminded us all that the August 23rd meeting is closed, so do not bring any guests. Steve asked the board for agenda items for the next Board meeting, August 22nd, not the 15th.

Bud Deering alerted us to a 7:00 PM tv program that would include a shot of the Rotary Wheel downtown during the World Cup Events.

Steve adjourned the meeting.
