Durango High Noon Rotary Club
Minutes of our meeting, August 2, 2001
Steve opened the meeting, asking Carl Clark to lead the prayer, followed by the pledge. He reminded us that lunch is now served at 11:45 AM allowing more time for fellowship (and seconds?) and to certain that we have time for club business and to be courteous to our speakers.
Steve recognized and thanked those that participated in the Fiesta Days Parade, decorating, loading/unloading and walking the parade route. It was great fun!! We attempted to bribe the parade judges with some left over doughnuts, to no avail.
Guests were introduced, including:
Melissa J. Caskey updated the club on the golf tournament and asked members to contribute more door prizes.
Steve W. asked how many members had received their tax rebates and encouraged us to donate all or a portion to the Rotary Foundation.
As a follow-up to Terri Leonard's presentation on acupuncture last week, Steve W. indicated he was told that a guest from last week sought her help and that a number of Rotarians are her patients.
Tom G. passed around an e-mail to Charlie Albert, with photos of the ambulance that our club donated in conjunction with the Club Rotario Comayagua. The sender, Saul Rivera, said, "we also say thanks to the Rotarians from Durango High Noon Rotary Club that were the people that cooperated a lot to make this possible."
Steve reminded us again about the District Conference in Telluride, October 5-7. To meet the new RI President's challenge to become a Distinguished Club, certain numbers of members and all the officers must attend. Clear your calendars and be there! Make your reservations at the Peaks by August 5th to get the $105.00 per night rate and sign up to attend the Convention until September. 15th. Our District Governor, Bill Tarpley, has asked that the club bring our Rotary Wheel to the convention.
More World Cup Bike news. Two ice chests that were at the tent are still unaccounted for. Maybe, just maybe, Tonya might have them in the back of her truck?
Steve asked that Past Presidents of the club to raise their hands and suggested that we should nominate one for District Governor. Expect to here more on this subject.
Chair of the Fun Committee, Jeannie W. directed everyone's attention to the sign up sheets for Rotary Night at the Melodrama. September 7th, $20.00 a head, with $10.00 going back to the club. She knows how to put the 'd' in fun! Thanks Jeannie!!
Jack Walls asked the club to find a home for a student arriving from Thailand this weekend. Contact Jack at 375-6254. The young lady arrives at the airport at 7:00 PM this Sunday(?). Contact Paulette Church (259-2143) for details and to join the welcoming.
committee.
Our Prez is big on this 'Secret of Life' thing, making the club a big jury via a thumbs up or thumbs down vote after a member discloses their secret. Members with a majority of thumbs down pay a $5.00 fine.
Brian M. shared his recent birthday experience with us. He was sick, he was gone and to top it off, his wife threw him a party and he did the cooking. His secret of life is the OUTDOORS. Brian generously contributed $1,000.00 to the golf tournament.
Pam announced that, Jenny "Miss July" Kane, is now assisting with fine collection and she collected from herself for a write-up in the Herald.
Arvella saved her husband about $40k by buying a Mustang convertible instead of a Porsche, so she ponied up happy bucks.
Pam closed her first escrow at her new place of biz and made a contribution.
Margaret is off crutches and John B. is about to be a daddy again. Did Pam hit them too?
Melissa C. 'won' the drawing and answered the brainteaser correctly with lumber company. She received 5 quick picks for the lottery.
Before our 'speakers', Margaret reminded everyone to be specific when submitting a meeting make up.
Steve introduced today's presenter, his child bride, Jeannie Wheeldon. She and cast members from the Melodrama presented Melodrama 101, a history of the art, some local history, how she finds and adapts scripts and the rigors of auditioning talent.
They players then demonstrated the aspects of melodrama, words, movement and music. The pianist, Don French played a salute to our veterans of military service to close the presentation.
Carl Clark warned the club of a virus attached to a bogus e-mail sent under his name. Delete and do not open is the advice.
Steve closed the meeting announcing that next week's speaker is from Timber Tech.
