>to be wearing long pants. I wonder if any one remembers the tale of

>Bowser's Trousers and his flair for notorious attire. Oh well, time does

>pass by rather quickly. Tom spoke of his tomato plant, which is now twelve

>inches high. Tom stated he now knows why he and his wife do not return to

>Durango until the first of May. Jim Mulkey was asked to open with prayer

>and pledge. Tom then began the introduction of our guests. Summer may

>be past but we did have quite a few guests present for our meeting. Ted

>Robson was there, as was Jenny Kane. Rick Donner joined the group, as did

>Gabriel Zeilinger. Rod Mueller, a dentist, was at the table with our guest

>speakers, Dr. Chuck Salka and Dr. Don Bader. Tom introduced his guest Doug

>Lashley. Tom mentioned our failure at meeting the needs of Habitat on

>this past Tuesday. Tom and Americare had expected seven worthies to appear

>to help build the new duplex at Jenkins ranch. Tom showed and the rest were

>waiting for a phone call that never came. Tom said that he was given jibs

>all day long for lack of response. Mark Prouty was given the floor to

>speak about the Mexican Food Fiesta. Mark began by thanking the club for

>all the help. He said at one point he thought he and two others would have

>to do all the work. Fine free passes were given to many in the club for

>their help above and beyond expectations. The names were Dave Farmer, John

>Marshall, for directing traffic, Don Freemyer, Jane Fogleman, Emil Nagy for

>doing everything that was needed and continuing to volunteer, Arvella and

>John her husband, for doing dishes and finally being asked to sit down and

>relax. Thanks also to all the drivers who picked up food or went to City

>Market for things we needed, Dick Pearson for the great help of City

>Market, Jill Bruce for handling the deliveries, Ward Homes for the great on

>the air coverage, Mike Mc Guire for the arrangements with the band and the

>right volume level, Sam Stites for having his wife come and help. Scott

>Mathis was noted for bringing his wife, Joy, to help. Nancy Hammond was

>awarded a pass for all the great printing she did. Mark Seiter also sent

>his wife Janet to collect the cash and all the information on attendance.

>Medow Gold and Coca Cola each gave a discount and Southwest Ice donated the

>Ice. Rick Routh was the guy who took all the extra food to Manna Soup

>Kitchen and the Shelter. This truly was a team effort. Mark thanked one and

>all and Kevin remembered the effort needed to do this. Bill Maurer

>was presented his Paul Harris Certificate and Medal this day. He told a

>great story about alligators and courage as our group wanted to recognize

>him for his courage. He thanked the group and stated that we each show

>courage each day as we fight the alligators in our lives. Jeff Brown

>was honored by the State Patrol for his efforts to have folks buckle up.

>Jeff passed out two dollar bills to all the kids at Escalante who were

>buckled up when they arrived at school. Greg Lyman told of how Ron Mass and

>his family had survived a car crash as they were wearing seat belts. Krispy

>Kreame donuts were presented to Mike McGuire for the president. Tom

>mentioned that we received an award from the Salvation Army for our bell

>ringing efforts. Dave Brooks needs help with the review of scholarship

>applications. If you want to help Dave, give him a call or he may call you.

>Tom Brossia needs help in finding a place for our Rotary Exchange student.

>He has two who appear to be great choices, so give him a call. Pam Moore

>asked for help with the trash pick up on the 21st. The day begins with

>breakfast at Kennebec café. Wayne, Miss Jane, Rick, Jack and Mike all

>volunteered. We then heard from the Dr. Salka and Dr. Bader about

>Travel Health Services. These physicians can help avoid some of the common

>problems faced by travelers to exotic places. They discussed the fact that

>out of 100,000 travelers, traveling for one month, it is expected that

>50,000 will develop a health problem. These 50,000 breaks down to having

>8,000 visit a physician and 5,000 having to stay in bed during the travel

>period. They also expect that 1,100 will be incapacitated when they arrive

>home, 50 will be evacuated from where they travel, 500 will be hospitalized

>and 1 will die. The clinic they are opening will be a place where a person

>traveling can come for advice, counsel and guidance in what to expect in

>the way of illnesses when traveling to some remote or exotic destination.

>They are able to provide immunizations and medicines to help prevent

>illness from ruining your once in a lifetime trip. Did you know that

>travelers diarrhea is the most common illness when traveling? Accidents

>also make up a large number of traveling problems such as motor vehicle

>crashes or other accidents. Be wise - check with these guys before

>traveling. Thanks Dr. Salka and Dr. Bader.
