HIGH NOON ROTARY
September 7, 2000
Wow. Rotary was a grand event this day. We had an excellent fill-in as
Tom was off solving a plumbing problem. Who, you may ask, was the worthy
who controlled the group this day? It was Steve Wheeldon. Steve noted the
passing of the Motorcycle event. He said that our own Pam Copeland was
introduced to the crowd as a member of High Noon Rotary. Applause was
offered to this rider of fine cycles. Steve asked Rick O'Block to open with
prayer and pledge.
We then moved onto the introduction of guests. We had Kelly Davidson from
Angel Fire, New Mexico. Dick Gibbs and Joe Colgin from the evening club
joined our group for the day. Brian Kimmel, who has a better attendance
record than most of us joined us for lunch. Meg Downing and Mike Stephenson
from the Adult Education Center, were there. These folks are looking to be
on the Rotary Group Study exchange. We approved the applications this very
day.
Steve Govreau was given a moment to inform the club of our e mail
bulletins. We will e mail these literary marvels to help reduce the cost of
mailing and postage. We also will have a few copies available at the sign
in desk each week. The other thought is we can go back to mailing them if
need be.
Ward Holmes asked us to turn on the radio and help with the United Way
fund raiser. The auction will be from eight to six. There will be an ad in
the Herald to help you know what is up for sale.
Bob Volger and George Litow will be doing a horse ride with a dozen of our
folks on the 24th above Little Molas Lake.
Dave James needs folks to help send out thank you cards from the Golf
Tournament. He got his help I think, but many hands make light work. Give
David a call if you can help.
District Conference is happening in October in Vail. The Hotel is filled
but other rooms are available if you want to join the event. The founder of
Polio Plus will is one of the speakers at this event.
Kevin Bruce complained of being irregular. He received an appropriate
amount of grief from the crowd and clarified that it was his attendance
that he was referring to. We did draw a number and Burt Coleman was given
the chance to sell the chance. He sold the chance to Jim Williams who paid
fifty for Len Goebel to spin. Spin Len did, and he will serve a meal at the
Soup Kitchen.
Bud Deering was then recognized by the President. Bud stated it was his
birthday and he donated 1000 dollars for a scholarship to Vo Tech. Thanks
Bud.
Kip Stransky, from the Forest Service, a state agency, was our speaker of
the day. The Forest Service is interested in vertebrates. They have no
specialty in trees or such. Kip has a special interest in birds and is
known as the bird man. Kip said the agency has been known as the Hook and
Bullet Club in the past. They actually try to increase the game herds and
increase the fish populations, thus the name. Kip said that wildlife issues
cause people to be on different sides of an issue. He said that one such
issue is the closure of Perrins Peak Wildlife Area. They close the area
after hunting season to allow the big game a place to get away from people.
This decision causes the hikers and others to complain. They have programs
that help alleviate damage that elk may cause to fences or pastures and
attempt to work in partnership with the landowners. Thanks, Kip.
ONE FINAL NOTE: "Success is more attitude than aptitude."
