HIGH NOON ROTARY

September 30, 1999

We had a great meeting this day. Pete returned to fill the rostrum. He was in finest casual attire. The reason is it was Susan’s birthday. Susan has always taken her birthday off and Pete joined her this year. Speaking of Pete, Pete spoke of Pete Turner and mentioned he is doing well. Pete Turner may even settle down and join the club again. We did move on after Pete questioned Pam about her motorcycle. One more Pete gave some guff to the President and was given the chance to redeem himself by reciting the Four Way Test. Pete Holton did the task and was allowed to offer his barbs without fines. Yes, Virginia we did offer prayer and pledge. This was done by Mark Prouty.

Pete reserved a seat for Bill Maurer as he under goes surgery for a recurrence of cancer. Wynn

gave an update on Bill and asked that we offer prayers for him. Wynn said that Bill’s mom is appreciative of the support given to Bill and his family by the club. He mentioned we should call and let her know of our concern and prayers.

Ellen Roberts mentioned that a host home is needed for Ricardo for the period November through February. If you want to have a great experience and met a great teen-ager call Tom, Ellen or Paulette Church. Tom noted that this kid is one busy person and is a great quest in your home.

We introduced quests’ Dick Gibbs of the evening club joined us. We had Bill Harkins from Lake Mary. Florida joined us. Phillip McClenndon from Pagosa was introduced. Pete Sanders introduced Jack Jordan a retired family physician from Monte Vista. Susan Davis and Taylor Cooper from our Interact Club was there. They brought news of the work they have done on the Park by the school. The FFA and Interact have joined forces to work on the Park. The park will be a memorial to Tracy Patcheck a teacher who died last spring in an accident with a horse. They asked if any of us wanted to be a super fan and if so all we needed to do was give ten to twenty-five dollars to the group. Your name then would be announced at the Football game on Friday. Margaret Gray is the club sponsor of the group. She joins them each Monday afternoon as they plan their future. Margaret also mentioned that she is in need of volunteers to be Study Buddies to help kids with their homework. Do you want to help a child grow call Margaret at 247-3720?

Pete then congratulated the 15 or so folks who pulled off the building of the Play Set at the Community Shelter. Lots of strong backs and sharp minds allowed this effort to be successful. Four names were heard: Wayne Bedor, Jeff Brown, Steve Osborne and Tom Gray. Who were those others and did they get makeups?

Virginia then mentioned that Carl Clark has taken his wife to the City of Hope Hospice in California. We signed a card to tell him of our concern. We will offer prayers for all concerned.

Pete mentioned that there may be confusion about Committee assignments. Do you know what Committee you are on? If you need to know Jan Williams has put together a three-ring binder that will be on the front table so you can learn of your assignment. Speaking of Committees, the VOCATIONAL COMMITTEE will meet a 11:15 in our meeting room.

Pete Holton became a super fan as he was again the object of affection for the fine master. He gave twenty bucks. Pete also was the lucky contestant in the question of the week contest. The question of the week as by the ever quick and resourceful Bob Volger was, "Rotary International has a Motto each year. This year the motto is Act with and then there are three words that begin with C’s. Please name the three words." Pete answered Kindness. There is more than one way to spell a word. The answer is on the Bulletin and is ACT WITH CONSISTENCY CREDIBILITY CONTINUITY.

The program of the day was a presentation by Petra and Jeff Brown about the United Way. Jeff is serving as the campaign chair this year. Karen L’Argent, Pattie Burkholder and Pete Turner have served as campaign chairs in the past. Many of the club members have served on the Board with Bud Poe and Ellen Stuart-Roberts being current members. Pete and Susan Sanders have served in the past. Petra mentioned the great brochure that they have this year. The cost of printing was donated by Williams Field Service. The Art Work was done by kids form the Animas Valley School and Bayfield Family Center. Leanne Beasley was the creative person to do the design and Colorquest Graphics did the printing. The theme this year is through the eyes of a child. They have moved more of the goal to fund children’s programs this year. Petra and Jeff then gave us the opportunity to see the 19 minute video that speaks to some of the agencies they help. United Way has 42 programs involved with them and United Way serves the five county area of the San Juan Basin. The goal set for this year is one-half million dollars. The goal has risen from 172 thousand in 1992. Thanks to you it works for all of us. The United Way.

ONE FINAL THOUGHT: "No man can become rich without himself enriching others."
