HIGH NOON ROTARY

January 21, 1999

Today we had a Club Assembly. The intent is to get us all informed about the inner workings of the club. We have four names put forward for Membership. The first is Kevin Bruce's wife, Jill. The second is Margaret Gray, the Director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Burt Coleman is next and he is a transfer from Cortez . Burt is an Orthodontist. The last is Emile Nagy, an Administrator at Durango Orthopedics. If you have concerns about these folks joining our grand assemblage, call Susan Sanders or Petra.

Yes, we did begin the meeting. Petra was really excited about this day. She was enthused about Rotary and all of those who were in attendance. She was excited, so excited. Carl Clark opened with prayer and pledge.

The next thing was the introduction of our guests. We had a husband and wife, Lisa and Steve Govreau, join us. Mark Prouty was with us. This man has recently returned to our community from Craig. Helen Roberts was there. She is an attorney who does estate planning. Dick Gibbs was there, as was Dan from Fort Lewis. Jill Bruce was there dealing with the tickets for Swing Your Sweetie.

Bud Deering filled in for JR. He fined Bud Poe for the picture in the paper. Bill Wright was also pictured in the press. He was not fined as he was doing one of those laudable things reading to kids. Mike McGuire was fined for his story in the Denver Post. This man has traded his Colonel stuff for the thrill of the road. William Clark paid a fine for his good news. He will soon be a Grandparent. This man is not like some nameless soul who did not revel in the birth of his first grandchild born this day.

Pete Sanders spoke about the Web Site. He has been maintaining it in the absence of Tom Galbraith. Megan Volger then spoke to the fund raiser of the Interact Club. They can receive $7000 in a grant for a community service project if they raise $500. They are having a Spaghetti Dinner on February 8 to raise the cash. ( $6.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids.)

William Clark updated the group on our Valentines event. We need 30 couples to break even on the event. The event is to help sponsor our International Project in Mexico City and other projects here. Robin Jackman is the leader of the Bar Tenders Group and she needs volunteers.

Petra mentioned the Snowdown float. She has many volunteers but is in need of more. Contact Petra if you wish to decorate the float, be on the float, or tear down the float. We will soon travel to the Children's museum to see the Bat Cave and the Observation Deck we sponsored. More to come on this event. Petra mentioned the District Assembly to be held on April 3. We will, as a club, be involved.

The game of Name That Rotarian was played this day. The question was "Which distinguished Rotarian's last name is an Irish word for a type of Roof?" The guess was Ron Holligan, but in truth, it was Steve Wheeldon. The Honored Rotarians for today were Ward Holmes and George Johnson for all the plugging of Swing Your Sweetie. Pete Sanders was also honored for all the assistance he has been to the President.

Joe Williams then gave a brief overview of our International Projects. Seems our club member, Joe, and a few other good souls have developed a way to help some folks in need up in the Roaring Fork Valley. There will be teachers and dollars brought from Mexico to help teach and reach those Mexican Nationals living and working there. We also have gotten the computers and sewing machines delivered to Mexico with the assistance of Joe, Jan, Bud Poe, Jim Jennings and Charlie Albert. Seems a window of opportunity opened and the crew got the goods on the road. Also, we will be having the ground breaking for a community center in Mexico City in April. This is a service project of our club. Through this effort and the work of Joe Williams, Jan Williams and Tom and Stana Galbraith, our club has moved to a new level of Rotary Service and has helped to build the goal of Service above self.

ONE FINAL NOTE: "Enthusiasm is the mother of effort, and without it nothing great was ever accomplished." Joe Williams
