HIGH NOON ROTARY

November 19, 1998

We were warmly welcomed by Petra this fine day. She stated it was a lovely day in our neighborhood. She asked Margaret to read a poem and lead the pledge. Thus, we disposed of the ordinances of Rotary.

Guests were introduced to the assemblage. There were a bunch. Ben Skies from Akron, Ohio was introduced. Randy Stanowicz from Pagosa was there. Major Laura Thomas was with our best friend Mike. Jane Fogelman was also there with her protector, Winn.

Dave Farmer was greeted with a happy hello. Petra then spoke to the Club about the bell ringing schedule. We are filled for the challenge event with that K club. We are now accepting folks to fill in for times during the Thanksgiving to Christmas period. The names will go on a list to be backup to those who do not fill their spots. Pam Copeland gave reminder sheets to those who are scheduled for the Thanksgiving weekend at Wal-Mart. Pete Sanders announced the election of the officers for the 2000/2001 was today. Ballots were on the table and the ballot box was passed and stuffed. We will know soon who this grand leader will be.

J. R. then took the floor to raise the blood pressure with his fines. Robin Jackman sat beside J. R. to avoid a fine, but fell to this man anyway. Seems she, Karen L'Argent and Michelle Wiley all failed to wear their badges. It was a grand leader who commented "We need no stinking badges". Right, Bob Volger. Bud Poe got his make up and community service stuff crossed up. He tried to take a United Way event and make it a Rotary make up. He left 5 bucks for this. Brian Meyers discovered a scandal, a free for all of pointing fingers, passing the buck and who knows what else. Seems our club wrote a check to Purgatory for a lunch we had there. The check was passed to Durango Ski Corporation who deposited it at Norwest. When it was presented for payment at Centennial, they refused to pay it. Thus, collection measures where taken. Oh, the shame of it all. The sad news is Colorado will gain a great person and the club will lose one for a period of time. Jim Wotkyns will be taking a leave of absence as he has been selected to be part of a leadership group called 50 for Colorado.

Christmas Party the 13th of December. Be there.

A family event is scheduled for December 13th at 5:30 at the Doubletree. Family, kids significant others all are invited. This meeting will serve as our Thursday meeting. I think the tab is $12.00 for adults. Plan to be there.

Josh Sinberg was asked to identify the three people inducted last week. He was one and Matt Felling and Scott Mathis were the other two. Today, Dan Hoback was inducted into the club. He is a salesperson at Rite-Way. He is on the homebuilders board. He has a wife of 27 years, Barbara. They have two sons. One is a senior at college and the other works at Burns Bank. Dan has been with Rite-Way for 16 years.

Mike Schafer then gave an overview of the Rotary Foundation. Seems this group gave 800 million to help with health, hunger, humanitarian, and educational endeavors during the last year. The Foundation has more than 1 billion dollars in assets all given by Rotarians to aid and assist mankind. We contribute through our Paul Harris and Sustaining Memberships. One example Mike gave was 8.5 million kids less than five years old were vaccinated for Polio in a 96-hour period by the assistance and funding of the foundation. How about 50 kids getting surgery to fix their cleft pallets? That is what $10,000 does. Thanks Mike.

Joe Williams gave an update on the endeavors of the International Committee. A separate Bulletin will be sent to each member to read up on this. Great work on this stuff, Joe and Tom.

Tom Galbraith then showed us our Web Site. www.frontier.net/~highnoon. Check it out - we have pictures and all sorts of good stuff. Great work Tom

NO SHOW POLICY: History: We have had occasion, over the past few months, where club members have agreed to attend a function and then have not attended. This has caused the club to absorb costs that should have been shared by the attendees. Therefore, the following policy is established:

Attendance or sign up sheets will be used to determine who will be attending a function of the club. These functions will be arranged by a consensus of the club or by the Board and can be social or fund raising events. The sign up sheet will be the basis by which the club member is assessed the cost of the event. There will be a date that will be established that will allow a club member to cancel their participation in the event. If the club member does not cancel their attendance by this date they will be charged for the number of attendees as if they attended the event.

Lora Thomas has been proposed for membership by Roy Crow.

ONE FINAL NOTE: "If you cannot win then make the person ahead of you break the record."
