Opening
President Ward Holmes rang the bell,” and all stood to recite the Pledge of
Allegiance.
Steve Osborn took the Inspiration time to let everyone know that Jan’s
reconstruction surgery was very successful and she will be back soon. He
also paid for his 55th birthday and expressed aspirations to be in
the 60+ group (meal discounts!).

Announcements
Joseph reported on his weekend. He assisted in making the
Black Jack tables and he skied. Justin Osborne promoted the Red
Ball Ski Race, 11 have signed up and the goal is 15 to make up 2 teams.
The list was passed around. $10 for 2 races, 11-1.
(Trophies were shown). Ward announced that a Scholarship Committee
meeting would follow today’s meeting (this will be an every week
occurrence). Ward announced that if anyone is interested in
participating in the Snowdown Parade, that the
Daybreak Club is building a float. Tim Walsworth
passed around a sign-up sheet for those who wanted to participate in numerous
duties. Tim also reported on the financials for Red Ball. There is
$22,000 in income to-date. Profits will be split between the 4
clubs. Please turn in tickets to Mark Prouty.
Mike McGuire gave an update on the sale of the 3 Spanish coins.
They are on display at the Bank of the San Juans.
A map will also be auctioned and proceeds go to the Mexican orphanage
project. Two visiting Rotarian guests, Clyde Church and Marcel Thebolt, presented a PowerPoint advocating Red Ball:
“What is Red Ball Express?” They walked us through the processes and the
outcome is to support the non profit community. Want more

Sell tickets!
Peter Marshall announced that the Doubletree gift for a Red Ball door
prize is a Tucson hotel and golf package. Chip Lile.
The visiting students arrive next weekend and they need one more host family
for 1-2 students. Contact Chip if you can help.

Chandler is back and no tough fines (although he should have been
fined $1 for whining about the weather in the Pacific Northwest (scribe
commentary). HAPPY DOLLARS: Norm Freemyer
was thrilled to have celebrated his mother’s 95th birthday. Bill
Cartwright tossed in $3 for the 3 helpers who assisted in cutting 14 Black
Jack table tops and 2 roulette tops for Monte Carlo Night. Jay Hwang
tossed in and announced his 40th birthday gift to himself is a new
Porsche. John Wilkin was happy for not maiming the others who helped
with the Monte Carlo tops. Tim Walsworth
was thrilled to announce that United Way won the Chamber’s Nonprofit of the
Year award on January 18th. Brian Myers (?) paid a late
anniversary fine and was happy to be on a 35’ boat that he was on when in Cabo. Sara Olson was happy she received her
scuba diving certification and is planning a trip to Costa Rica next
month. Bud Deering tossed in some
dollars as this was a big day, having survived Dave Farmer’s group’s
physical therapy sessions. Steve Wheeldon
tossed in some money because of the news article on the closing of the Diamond
Circle Theatre and encouraged everyone to make reservations early for the last
year (a comment was also made about “Mr. Barker my wife’s idiot brother.”
He said Jeanne said she was a Rotarian in her interview, but it didn’t
make it in the paper. He also said those going to the La Plata Open Space
wine tasting and art auction need to come dressed as pirates or wenches. Ticket drawing. No basketball
toss so the money was to be split 50/50. Mark Donahue won
and donated it back to the scholarship fund. Ward had 2 tickets to
the Snowdown Follies Media Night (a dress rehearsal)
– “usually pretty good” and auctioned them off. Sold
for $120 to Dick Sullivan. Rick Routh
held up the Super Bowl square board and announced there are still squares for

introduced individuals representing two units of Fort Lewis College. Gigi Duthie, Director of Continuing Education and Andy Burns,
the new Admissions Director. Gigi kicked
off the dual program. She is a 3rd generation Durangoan
and stressed the importance of Continuing Education linking Fort Lewis College
to the community. Her office provides a service, a connection and
education. Catalogs for this spring semester’s
offerings ere on all tables. Categories of classes include
Arts/Crafts, Communications, Computer Skills, Environmental Health, languages,
Leisure, Ecommerce, Public Relations, Financial Planning, Fundraising and
several off-site course opportunities, including some abroad.
Andy
Burns is new to Durango and most recently at Johns Hopkins University. He
gave an overview of the A-B-C’s of Admission. A is involving alumni and
making connections with the FLC alumni community and asking for assistance in
attracting students to the college. FLC values these4 relationships and
is looking for alumni participation in the admissions process. B stands
for Being Involved in La Plata County high schools and described a
recruitment/application process they are trying in the schools, in some cases
waiving the application fees. 10-12% of the college’s student body is from
the country. C is for Commitment. Andy stated the scholarship
program has been revamped and that the college is committed to assisting
scholarship students, who maintain the criteria, with financial help for
4-years. He distributed a new brochure “Making College Affordable:
Ways to Finance Your Education at Fort Lewis College.”
The
presentations concluded with an active Question/Answer session.
Closing
Bud gave a quick story and Ward rang the bell to release
us.
